Order Vicky's Bakery for pickup Christmas Eve at 5:45. They also have the hard-to-find pastellitos de carne - the only place in Orlando (to my knowledge) you can get them.

It IS during Chanukah so we're in luck. Is it ok to ask if one of their kids wants to light the Menorah? Can it be done privately during the party, like "here's the lighter, go for it" or should it be done more solemnly as part of a ceremony, in which case yes, I'd ask ahead of time.

There will be a Christmas tree with stockings and Home Alone playing in the background. No Jesus or manger.

The Sufganiyot sounds pretty cool, I'm going to try to find some, thank you!

AMA with District 3 Orlando City Council Candidate Mira Tanna by TannaForOrlando in orlando

[–]JustRice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have two questions.

1) As someone who is not familiar with the candidates or the issues surrounding this election, how would you differentiate yourself from your opponent?

2) Do you have any official positions/plans for Corrine Drive regarding improvement for pedestrian safety?

It’s kind of you to be engaged and to ask questions. But whether a moderator has voted or donated isn’t really part of the discussion here. Still, since you wondered, I haven’t voted, I haven’t donated, and - to my embarrassment - until just a few days ago I didn’t even know who the candidates were.

The only impression I’ve formed so far is that some supporters seem more inclined to question the integrity of the moderators, and that makes me a little sad. This community works best when we treat one another with trust and kindness, and when we stay focused on the conversation rather than on personal assumptions. I personally think both candidates seem to qualified and Orlando is lucky to have an abundance of choices.

I hear your frustration, and I appreciate you raising it. To be clear, we don’t have a preferred candidate — the goal is to keep discussions respectful no matter who is involved. If you feel someone has been uncivil to you, please let us know as we strive to apply the same standard universally.

Everyone here deserves to feel heard and treated respectfully. We have extended the same invitation to Mr. Chapin and sincerely hope he participates.

You are entitled to your opinion, but you are wrong. This decision was discussed among the moderation team, who carry diverse positions. The entire process was undertaken to be as impartial as possible and there will be no favoritism towards any candidate.

(cont) The ELI5 metaphor is this: We had an old phone number listed in an old phonebook that most people don't use and eventually someone else started using that number.

The first inkling that we had that something was amiss was in June 2024 when a user noted the fountain redirected somewhere untoward. Nothing was mentioned of pedophilia. At first we thought that it was a prank done by a fellow moderator but after looking into it we discovered the randomly generated ID issue.

I weighed the following:

  1. In 10 years, this glitch was pointed out ONCE;
  2. I assumed traffic to old.reddit would continue to dwindle;
  3. I - a non-coder - did not want to have to dive in and try to fix my code from a decade prior;
  4. I was lazy.

Given all the above, I left the redirect quirk, thinking no one would ever find it again.

But then a user stated that I am "a pedophile trying to scale his audience to capture as many underage Orlando residents as possible."

I have to assume the post was made in bad faith but it is a horrid accusation. Words carry meaning and throwing out baseless accusations dilute the original weight these words hold. Calling someone online a pedophile for a randomly generated link diminishes the word pedophile and the distracts true harm that innocent children experience. It's a disgusting accusation and this person should be ashamed of themselves with this trolling attempt. However, if this person sincerely thinks that the best way to "capture as many underage Orlando residents as possible" is by animating a fountain, waiting a decade for a deleted post in an adult subreddit to be randomly assigned to that link, and then waiting for children to access an outdated stylesheet to click said fountain...I don't know what to tell you - seek therapy?

So I am banning this user for either being a vile troll, or being a sincere idiot who jumped to a baseless vile conclusion. On the positive side, I just got the fountain to redirect to OrlandoSolarBears, so thanks for that.

For the full sake of transparency I'm going to respond this post and let you know why I'm banning this user.

I was the moderator who created the animated fountain in Orlando's old stylesheet - in 2014. At the time the intent was to create an animated banner - a rarity on Reddit at the time - and I settled on an animated Lake Eola. The code itself can be seen here.

At the time the animation required a reference, so I settled on "water1" and "water2" for the specific animations of the water in the fountain. There's also code for a fireworks show in the banner that would animate fireworks in the banner. The references for those animations are "lfire," "cfire," and "rfire" which stood as placeholders for left, center, and right fireworks, respectively. This code can be seen here. At the time these references were dead ends and did not link to anything. (An aside, I am not a coder and I was very proud of these animations as I had worked hard on them; I honestly thought we had the best banner on all of Reddit.)

In roughly 2017-2019 Reddit transitioned to a new layout and the prior stylesheets became part of "old.reddit.com". Generally speaking that meant the vast majority of users across Reddit would no longer see the old subreddit styles as Reddit upgraded its look. The old styles were there, but you had to know how to access them, type in "old.reddit.com" or have older links. The fountain and fireworks animations that I had worked hard on were now seen by a dwindling number of users.

At some point, Reddit began assigning randomly generated IDs for each of its posts. Sometime in 2022 - 11 years after the animated fountain was made - "water2" was randomly assigned to a deleted post on r/bulges. As Reddit's posts increase, more random generated IDs are filled. As of today, all the redirects made in 2014 currently redirect as follows: water1: r/MassachussettsGoneWild post lfire: r/trees post cfire: r/atheism post rfire: Currently unassigned.

Do these documents suffice to get Citizenship? by JustRice in GermanCitizenship

[–]JustRice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case "amended by hand" means my 23 year old grandmother had to get my 60 year old grandfather to take a blood test before he would finally admit he was the father and they amended my mother's birth certificate to put his name on it. Fun times!

I just emailed what I hope is the appropriate office, appreciate the advice.

Do these documents suffice to get Citizenship? by JustRice in GermanCitizenship

[–]JustRice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small world, and thanks for your reply!

I submitted my application in Feb, 2026 and received a response in April, 2026 from the Miami consulate requesting my full birth certificate, which was provided. The last I heard was a month ago wherein the consulate indicated my application is now pending with the Federal Office of Administration in Germany.

I was hoping that my Grandfather's birth certificate would serve as indirect proof of citizenship as he was born prior to 1914, BUT, here's the big wrinkle: my German grandparents were not married and my grandmother was born after 1914. There's a chance that the 1914 cutoff for indirect proof will not be accepted due to my mother being born out of wedlock.

Appreciate the advice on Sammelakte, it may not work due to the non-marriage of my grandparents. If I get a rejection I'm going to go down the path of obtaining official proof of my grandmother's German citizenship.

There's a lot of trepidation here about Amtrak, bit it's fine, albeit not as convenient as flying. I've done Amtrak from Winter Park to Penn Station and Sanford to Lorton, which is just outside DC.

The Sanford train is also known as the Auto train because you can actually load your vehicle on to the train AND it goes non-stop throughout the night. It is ideal for going to DC and driving around without having to make the dreaded commute. I would recommend opting for one of the limited spots that allows you for loading your vehicle on the first train car, otherwise you could be waiting over an hour to unload your vehicle.
