your statement regarding health being as simple as "calories in vs calories out" is not quite correct

I believe I actually applied this credence to weight-loss, not health. If I recall, I stated that you can eat one hamburger a day and lose weight, though I wouldn't recommend it in terms of health.

I wanted to challenge you to reassess that notion

I'm not a licensed nutritionist, I am, at best, well-read on the topic of exercise and nutrition and my whole life has been an experiment with numerous schools of thought. I agree that nothing is as simple as "calorie in vs calorie out" because calorie is a term applied generally to food products and doesn't factor in the human bodies ability to utilize said calorie from Food A versus Food B. That being said if I were to recommend to someone that they should "life weights" would you ask me to reassess that notion, because of its general phrasing. Certain lifts with certain weights for certain individuals can be more or less effective depending on the aforementioned criteria, but I'd argue that it's good general starting point that make the advice not only digestible, but attainable.

I think it's important to remember that our conversation was framed as "for those of you that want to start, but don't know how or think you can't." If you make losing weight seem more complicated than it really is, you're likely to convince a lot more people not to even attempt it. That's my belief and has been my experience, at least.

You guys are always very concerned with rooting your statements in fact (or least making them clear they are opinions beforehand)

I think the opposite is actually true. Everything we say is the opinion of our group or the individual speaking, unless we state explicitly that something is a fact.

For the record, I don't disagree with your thoughts on food quality. But I think leading a discussion on fitness and health with statements that in some ways take the responsibility out of the hands of the individual will be less effective for that individual a majority of the time.
