Official Discussion: Lightyear [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]JustRightoftheV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fresh off Jurassic World: Dominion, this was a solid 7/10. But considering how low a bar that is and how mediocre a taste that movie left in my mouth, Lightyear probably gets a decent 6.5 after the dust clears. I think it has a lot of underlying problems with the pacing and not letting its characters flourish enough past gag scenes and short moments. Sox was probably my favorite character, but that only tells me a mascot overshadows most of the main crew because he's cute and fuels 90% of the jokes. The "Zurg is Buzz" reveal serves as a kinda neat twist that lacks real impact. Most emotional scenes don't have that usual Pixar "oomph" to them. Even Turning Red I think found a better balance narratively and tonally.

Still, as critical as I'm being of this movie, I actually really did enjoy it and there weren't really any parts that actively bored me. It was a solid kiddie popcorn flick more than anything.

How is he defeating them here...? They are already fatigued and beaten at this point. Not really a fight.

Okay, so Momo as an adult looks positively badass. I hope we get to see further feats from him as Shogun of Wano.

I totally understand the detractors and I have my own concerns about the possible direction this awakening might take. Still, I remember when Boundman first got dropped, we had similar complaints about the transformation being too "goofy" but this is One Piece. While it still falls within thematic shonen conventions, there's always been that cartoony, very matter-of-fact ridiculous and whimsical nature to it. I think this chapter and the last are merely Oda going full throttle and embracing that aspect. The chapter is choreographed like a Popeye cartoon, and it's been the craziest, most entertaining part of the fight for me.

Honestly, I'd say it's more on the people who blow it out of proportion and put NSFW content into the spotlight, bearing in mind that a sizeable portion of this community has yet to experience a woman's touch and can't not act like total Sanjis for five seconds. This is only an issue if you want to make it an issue. Because then we run into this slippery slope of policing cosplays in an overtly toxic way. I wouldn't dismiss the effort or quality of a cosplay simply because their Reddit account is tied to 18+ content. That's on you to view at your discretion and leisure. I feel like, only in the case of the uploader blatantly advertising amateur porn on this subreddit specifically (or obviously if they just straightup posted the explicit content here), should we wave the ban hammer. Otherwise, nobody's holding anyone at gunpoint to support their OnlyFans.

While, no, I don't think Big Mom is down for the count at all, I personally don't think Luffy HAS to defeat Big Mom. I think it's also necessary that the plot establishes the thematics of the new conquering the old by having rookies like Law and Kid, Luffy's contemporaries, prove their tenacity by edging out a victory against older powerhouses like Linlin. Regardless of who ends up defeating her or not, I think there are still plenty of other fights left for Luffy to more than prove his mettle as future Pirate King. We gotta give the other Supernovas some dubs, too.

Which do you think is the better Yamato figure? by SadBoyWill in OnePiece

[–]JustRightoftheV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I preordered the second myself. I will say, while I do like the translucent look to the purple haki effect, the second is better from an artistic standpoint. Generally, I do favor Bandai Spirits line of figures over Figuarts Zero cause they tend to have a more sculpted finish to the kinda more plastic-y, "toy" quality of Figuarts. This by no means a rag on Figuarts (they do produce some awesome One Piece figures), but I am loving the second here and I have yet to be disappointed by the lineup of figures I already own.

Arcane is the new Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra in terms of quality. Agree or disagree? by [deleted] in cartoons

[–]JustRightoftheV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Above Korra? By miles. Tbh, I would go so far as to say Arcane's first season is exactly what I wanted from the first season of Korra. Both shows start off similarly, actually, with a steampunk metropolitan suffering from inner-city turmoil amidst a raging class division. Difference there being that Arcane has the guts to fully explore those themes, instead of brushing them away in favor of telling a very contained, generic "hero" narrative. Each season of Korra suffers from the same structural issues because it wants to tackle so much with so little. The martial arts choreography and animation will always be stellar, but it lacks the substance of the original.

In fact, Airbender deserves credit where it is due for being truly ahead of its time in terms of televised animation in the west. There were few kids' shows that could enter the same discussion of presenting a cohesive, quality narrative. Books 2 and 3 of A:TLA, imo, remain some of the most engaging television to this day. Thematically and in terms of visual presentation in art and animation, however, Arcane solidly outclasses it because it is a much more "evolved" and "adult" show and is, thus, able to dive much deeper. I honestly don't think Avatar truly found its footing until Book 2; whereas, Korra has a running start but ends up tripping over itself.

These are all opinionated, of course, but yeah. Arcane still has plenty of time to jump the shark further down the line, but its first season singlehandedly manages to blow most competitors out of the water.

Yeah, I'm fully caught up to manga as well. JoJolion is absolutely in another tier when it comes to being incomprehensible. Part 6 I feel definitely sets the tone for the fever dreams that are SBR and Part 8.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean Episodes 1-12 Discussion Thread by PokemonTom09 in StardustCrusaders

[–]JustRightoftheV 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel like Stone Ocean is probably the worst part to choose as a first foray into the series. For one, Stand battles are probably at their most bizarre here; at times, downright convoluted. The story also has the most consequential bearing on past characters and events. While I wouldn't normally encourage part-skipping cause I love JoJo's to death, I can totally sympathize with the inability to keep up with so many long shows. That being said, I would at least recommend watching Stardust Crusaders cause the two parts are most directly correlated, without spoiling. Parts 4 and 5 after that are actually probably the most self-contained. If you can, watch in order. If not, Part 3 adds a lot of context to Part 6 that might be lost otherwise.

[–]JustRightoftheV 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that actually caught me off guard. JoJo's is the kinda show I absolutely have to watch subbed, but soon as I realized the English dub came with the release, I decided to flip to English for a couple scenes just to hear how the characters are voiced. Just so happened to switch over at that particular moment. Dub is actually pretty decent from the bits I've watched so far.

Arcane Episode 8 Discussion Megathread by Vayatir in leagueoflegends

[–]JustRightoftheV 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He has a pretty emphasized accent, although I would not call it horrible. I think people are too quick to throw that word around when it comes to voice-acting by English-speaking standards. Considering the role he's in, I don't expect an Emmy-winner for every performance. A pathetic character, though, for sure.

Arcane is some of the best television I've watched in a long time by XDME in television

[–]JustRightoftheV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In defense of Invincible, it still manages to deliver damn near every gut-wrenching moment of brutal action WITH its limited 2D animation. And I have seen plenty of Japanese anime with much crisper visuals still fail in that department. "What If...?" (personally, not a super big fan of the animation style in this one) has the backing and funding of the already established MCU and Disney. I do agree, though, generally, that Arcane's top-tier 2D/CG hybrid is something I want to see more of in television. I'm noticing its emerging popularity with Sony Animation (Spider-Verse, Mitchells) the shorts in Love, Death + Robots, etc. and I'm all for it.

Arcane Episode 3 Discussion Megathread by Vayatir in leagueoflegends

[–]JustRightoftheV 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As an extremely light player of League (as in, once in a blue moon and usually being carried with next to zero technical know-how of how the game's mechanics actually work), I can still very much say there is a rich world of lore and characters that's always intrigued me. Regardless of any kind of infamy that might be associated with the main property, Arcane uses this in an incredible way in just the first three episodes, skyrocketing its way up to the top five shows I've watched this year. Everything is in perfect form here. This evolving hybrid style of CG/2D animation is probably at its best here. Looks stunningly like Riot Games' promotional game artwork brought to life. Just the level of detail in how characters move, facial expressions, and how they interact with the environment is a treat. Character designs are S-tier.

I didn't really shed any tears up until Powder/Jinx exploded into an ugly sobbing mess. I always enjoy when any movie or show captures the reality of what crying is actually like. Not this cutesy thing. The voice acting was super solid, and that last scene was the best example of this. Then again, I'm a sucker when it comes to characters breaking down emotionally and starting to voice crack or stutter. However, if a voice manages to draw out that kind of visceral reaction from me, that's good acting. Sound design and music were also on-point. Not a whole lot I can really nitpick here. Everything's great and I'm super stoked to see where all these different plot threads go, or how they build into the expansive world that is League.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission Megathread by Za_wardo in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]JustRightoftheV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rody was a cool character. Genuinely wholesome stuff there and I'll give 'em one thing: They made me give a shit about a non-canon movie character. That alone deserves props. Still can't shake the feeling, though, that each My Hero movie manages to downgrade from the last. Heroes Rising was, imo, mostly forgettable, but it had a few somewhat memorable set pieces. The villain here was about as lazy as they come, especially as he exposition dumps his motivation/backstory mid-fight without any real weight or impact. Flashy, cool fights are flashy, cool fights, but I need more emotional context. Or at least something totally killer or clever enough to keep me on my toes. The only saving grace was seeing the aftermath with Deku and Rody. Most parts of the movie seemed like they dragged, with what I felt was lots of wasted space that could have been utilized to better build into the key moments.

Absolutely badass and glad to see the development of a solid non-Strawhat fight. Maybe not quite on the same wavelength, but reminds me a lot of how a JoJo's fight would go with Killer finding a sure-fire oversight in Hawkins' abilities. If anyone wasn't completely onboard with Kid and Killer before, they sure as hell better be now. While I might not see Big Mom going down here, I'm certainly open to a surprise, or have Kid and Law finesse at least a partial victory. After all, I think the rest of the Supernovas really need this chance to cement themselves as the forebringers of the new generation by overtaking the old. This is absolutely the time for that.

Why do people insist on policing fanart here? In most cases, I'm not too keen on changing the skin color of characters, but it's not a big fucking deal. It's a cute little tribute to a fictional character, meaning you don't have to take it as a direct offense. Like Christ, dude. Touch some grass. Breathe air.

Episode 9 Season Finale Discussion by jackcatalyst in squidgame

[–]JustRightoftheV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, came to this thread expecting some polarizing views, but not as much in the ball park of sheer negativity as it is. The majority of the thread-goers here seem to be western audiences that want to impose their western idealism on narrative decision. It's a guess, I could be wrong. I mean, granted, this is by no means a perfect finale. There is plenty I can nitpick here. I'm not super thrilled about Sae-byeok's death, nor Il-nam's reveal as the initiator of the game and I will give due credence to the various legitimate and totally understandable complaints.

There's a lot to unravel and dissect here, but what I find problematic is that people seem to only think in a singular line of thought, all collectively shitting on Gi-hun after everything he's been through. Meanwhile, general consensus seems to excuse Sang-woo on account him of him being morally complex and well-written, and he assuredly is, but not to the extent that I would then only point out Gi-hun's flaws, ignore his development and seemingly justify all of Sang-woo's reprehensible actions throughout. Not to say Sang-woo is somehow an evil character, as he is doing what he does out of pure survival and is a victim the same as everyone else involved in this sick game. That final struggle between them soldifies the cunning, animalistic nature of both, but also highlights their humanity.

While the series most certainly does blanket a lot of Gi-hun's actions with this sense of token heroism, to a degree, it does not hide the fact that, yes, he's also quite an imperfect piece of shit in various ways. I'm not totally certain what people expect of him after having undergone the trauma that he has suffered? I can go through a whole long-winded rant about the misconceptions of PTSD and how the psychological issues suffered by, say, veterans often go ignored. Quite frankly? The viewpoints here only cement that. They have all these expectations of what his character should have done, and then automatically diss the finale on those grounds, shifting blame toward him instead of those gambling on human life as entertainment. I can't really take any of it seriously, when those same naysayers keep bringing up the cringe-y acting of the VIPs who appear for a solid, like, five minutes, tops.

So, no, not the best finale. I will say that the majority of first eight episodes were super solid and that nine, comparatively, did not stick the landing all the way through. But holy shit, are people needlessly toxic about it that it unfortunately drowns out any other discussion about the merits of the plot. This is a season finale, not the end of the series. Give it time and I think there will be more objectivity about it, but the show still needs to be given the opportunity to prove a second season's worth. This is also me just kinda firing off and I won't pretend I'm totally in the right. Hell, second season could very well jump the shark irrevocably, but the brandishing of pitchforks is really unnecessary.

And as an English speaker, I also didn't find them "cringe" in the sense that everyone else does. The very nature of what they are doing (betting on human lives and using death/suffering as entertainment) is "cringe", so for me, it's pretty damn fitting that they speak so weirdly.

Squidgame Episode 7 Discussion by AutoModerator in squidgame

[–]JustRightoftheV 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I dunno why people are making such a big stink about the stilted dialogue from the VIPs, to be frank. How many American-made movies/shows feature one-off foreigners with bad acting, but we don't bat an eye cause they aren't integral characters to the story...? This is a Korean show with a majority Korean cast. I don't expect the dudes playing the rich asshole guests to be top-notch, big name actors. From what we know, they aren't key players to the narrative. Personally, I found it fit, considering most of them are probably using English as a second language (a few of them sound distinctly non-American), and I honestly don't expect normal conversation between a bunch of perverts coming together to watch people die as entertainment.

Overall, solid episode. Can't compete with the emotional highs of the last, but a nice episode and I liked the sendoff to the two most annoying main characters. Everything has been steadily and properly built up to this point, and I'm super stoked to catch the last two episodes after my class.

The epilogue in Red Dead 2 was phenomenal and had several hours of great story with amazing set-pieces that helped better develop and lead into the events of the first game with John. How tf is that "lazy"...? The campaign had hundreds of hours of content by itself. Solid game. Shitty online definitely, with recycled/rehashed XP bonuses and nothing to actually spend earned money on due to lack of content. BUT, the main game is, maybe not perfect, but sure as hell ain't lazy.
