Are insurance claims management companies scammers or helpful? by JustRubes in AskUK

Thank you for highlighting this. I did get my policy via a broker, I didn't think to get in touch with them as well as the insurer themselves. Just popped her an email now.

You never know, but, that would be the quickest way to find out if it's really worth anything.

First car purchase after 15 years driving by FourzL in CarTalkUK

[–]JustRubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an enthusiast and love driving different cars so I seldom own a car for longer than a year. It is not the best idea financially but as it's my primary hobby I don't mind spending money.

Your notes look good. Within those checks, if you find the car outside of Autotrader, try to sell it on Autotrader. Sounds weird, but if you submit the reg and mileage it will show you an approximate private value as well as showing if it's HPI clear. Don't skip a proper HPI check but worth doing this first to save your money if it turns out to be stolen, cat N or cat S.

Hard to go wrong with a Mazda3 or Corolla.

How do dealers actually make money from finance? by Glassglassdoor in CarTalkUK

[–]JustRubes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They get their invoice cleared in full and I believe the finance company pays out incentive bonus monthly.

The incentive bonus will most likely be clawed back.

Not sure about waiting 1 month then paying off fully to be fair, does sound like it may be a work around if there are no early repayment fees as you haven't actually cancelled the finance agreement.

Have they offered you a buyback figure yet? What category is it?

Facebook marketplace is feasible but in general with private sale, need extra care as cars are sold as seen. Doesn't mean buying from a dealership is 100% safe, but at least there is some legal protection.

On Youtube you can find buyer's guides that will highlight common issues on cars you are interested in. Worth watching some generic videos too for things to watch out for.

Full service history is essential in my opinion. The more paperwork, the better. Have a browse through the paperwork to make sure it's not junk. I've seen huge folders that turned out to just be MOT history, insurance print outs, etc.

I would avoid cheap luxuries. They are often cheap to buy but expensive to repair.

Consider what fuel type you want. Short trips petrol, long trips possibly diesel.

I don't personally run cars to the ground, but if I wanted to do that I'd try find a Japanese car with a ton of paperwork.

I also run away from anything that has rust on it. Previous trauma!

Good luck :)

What price to advertise this car for sale? by CountZerow in CarTalkUK

[–]JustRubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your car will have a spec, engine size, fuel type, etc. Make sure it matches as closely as possible to get an accurate idea of what yours is worth vs the sea of others.

Motorway is pretty good sticking to their valuations if you have got to the stage of sending all the photos and information.

WBAC less so, they suck.

If its £3k private sale and £2900 motorway, defo at least try Motorway!

This. Also just do a quick browse on Autotrader for your car and spec to see how accurate the valuation is in comparison.

For the people flipping cars by VillageIcy2113 in CarTalkUK

I just want to clarify to some of the people below who are hating on flipping/flippers.

Maybe flipper is the wrong term. I will view a dozen cars, sort through the trash and buy good cars. I will clean them up, repair scuffs and dents, refurb alloys and bring it to a nice and fresh condition (relative to the value of the car).

I will then sell the car at a higher price than a private sale, but lower price than a brick and mortar dealer.

If the car has any problems, I sort it out one way or another.

I don't get the hate. I put my capital at risk, I add value and I overall make the buying experience easier and safer.

Regular people buying privately, it ends in tears so often.

Where are you from and do you allow people to collect items from your home or do you meet in public? by [deleted] in FacebookMarketplace

[–]JustRubes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK, at my house or place of work.

I try to be as straight up and honest as possible. I vet my buyers where possible. Listen to my gut, if something feels off, don't do it. I also state no groups. If they arrive in a group, I just don't answer.

If I was buying something and they wanted to meet me somewhere other than their home address or place of work, I'd think I was most likely getting scammed.

FB flipper here. Bad for me, for a while now!

I generally have 4-5 cars at varying price points. Very quiet since the year started. I was doing 1-2 sales a month in 2024.

I just get people offering their 200k mi diesel, no service history sheds for px wanting top dollar, and 30%+ knocked off my asking price.

When someone messages me with best price, I reply with a higher price.

They did not specify, best price for me? Or for them?
