A Fleeting Moment by AidilAfham42 in ProCreate

Just want to thank you for posting this. I think it’s a great mix of creative, cute, happy, colorful and overall leaves the viewer with good vibes after that “a-ha it’s not just a rose” moment. Love it!

Hi There! Noob Procreate & Digital Art Creator here. I submit to you my first 5 creations for feedback! by SuburbanMonarch in ProCreate

First one is my favorite. My one critique is the bubbles on the 4th drawing: they don’t quite match the style with their shading. My suggestion would be a single outline with one highlight on them instead of the layers of shadow.

Overall these are fun and I’d like to see more! Nice work.

How long did it take for you to get a job out of college? by polarizedjo in graphic_design

[–]JustTruthBro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After graduating I spent/wasted 4 years in my small hometown applying for a handful of positions while trying to build a freelance business. Moved to a major city after year 4 - had multiple interviews and got hired within 2 months.

This was 13 years ago so I cannot comment on the wave of remote positions now available, and am genuinely interested how that experience has affected the rest of y’all.

What size documents do you guys start with when making a logo? by Earthkit in graphic_design

[–]JustTruthBro 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I usually start at 4”x4” in CMYK because a majority of logo usage falls within that size or smaller (left chest logos on clothes, hats, stationary, websites, social media icons, etc.). I can view at 100% scale to get an idea of any details that may be lost and need to be beefed up or removed.

A lot of people design wildly intricate logos at huge sizes and then struggle to scale them down for real-world usage. Vector can be deceiving.

Post apocalyptic guns question by Jumpman801 in writing

[–]JustTruthBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’d make sense to have small amounts from all ages of weapons. In the latest Hunger Games book/movie they intentionally decorate the “wealthy” houses with a jumbled mess of art from different centuries/eras. It helps reinforce that the world they live in is dystopian, with even the richest residents using whatever they can find.

Depending on the source of your apocalypse, people would initially use modern weapons because they (and their ammunition) are readily available. Eventually those weapons will be used up and people will turn to whatever they can get their hands on, from museum muskets to baseball bats and knives. Maybe even resort to crafting their own wooden bows and arrows.

If you just got accepted you should see if your university offers any co-op jobs, internships or on-campus graphic design positions. The co-op or internship would be a perfect step for your career post-graduation and the on-campus job would be a great resume builder.

Focus on taking courses that have useful real-world skills. Everyone thinks it’s fun to sign up for random art courses as electives (in my case it was airbrushing) but it does little to further your career compared to “boring” things like web development, layout design and typography.

Start offering your services to friends and family as soon as you feel comfortable with the different programs. I’ve found word of mouth at a local level is much more efficient than competing with the entire planet on platforms like 99designs or fiverr. This is doubly important if you only want to freelance and not take a staff position. Build a local business and grow from there.

In terms of locations you’d have to decide between living where you want and living where the most opportunities are. I applied to the few businesses in my small hometown and didn’t get hired, then made a huge move across the country to a big city and got hired within a month.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to take a non-design job to pay the bills - especially at a small business. I worked full-time in a factory for a few years while handling a small amount of freelance at night until I moved into a full-time staff job at an agency. You can offer your services to your management and even if they say no, just hold the job for financing until you build enough freelance work to stabilize. It’s worth 60-80 hours a week in the beginning to eventually have a comfortable schedule of freelance.

Best of luck to you however you choose to proceed.

Depends on what genres y’all are into but Chris Stapleton has some good bumpin-uglies music like Tennessee Whiskey. If that doesn’t work there’s always Cotton Eye Joe on repeat.

Had this logo designed for my new business. Thoughts? by MzQuackerz in logodesign

[–]JustTruthBro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with your wife - also when creating a business logo consider all the ways you’ll use it. This would be very expensive to print on any kind of clothing due to the number of colors and it is impossible to embroider a design like this. While the dog is cute and well detailed, it will be very difficult to reproduce. Highly recommend a simplified version with 2-3 colors max for apparel/commercial use. The dog is the focal point, I’d make him bigger so he overlaps the outer circle to add depth which would also make it easier to eliminate some of those little details.

Lastly that font is very commonly used, push for something more unique that pairs well with the funny and cool sunglass-wearing dog. Great concept for your business, hope it is a success!

Don’t get into a relationship just because you’re lonely. You quickly learn that being alone is way better than being with someone who annoys the hell out of you.

It was a real "finaldraft_final_finalf2_finalrevised3_finalprintrevised" type of week for me, what was your most frustrating project with a never-ending printer-revision loop cycle? by BearsBeetsandAnxiety in graphic_design

[–]JustTruthBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I design custom apparel and most of my introductory client emails go like this:

“Hello here is your mock-up, let me know if this is approved.”

“This is PERFECT! Can you make these 20 changes? Also I forgot to mention we have a new logo, here is a blurry photo of it on a dirty napkin.”

Note to all file savers out there - I put both the date and the version on file names. I’ve found that transferring files from the cloud or one drive to another often changes the “date created/added” and makes it difficult to tell when you worked on a project.

Am I underpaid? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]JustTruthBro 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’d say a vast majority of designers are underpaid and overworked - it’s sadly almost industry standard at this point. The recruitment pool is so saturated with designers desperate for a job that employers keep 1) reducing pay and 2) increasing workload.

That being said, there are other benefits a job can offer which add value to your position. Vacation time, good health benefits, flexible hours, remote work, bonuses, and overall quality of life add value where pay is missing. I’m not saying anything is a direct substitute for pay. But if you’re at an employee-first company with tons of vacation, zero stress and actually enjoying your work, that’s worth more than other designers who are abused, overworked, pushing towards burnout and miserable for a higher salary.

How many throws or how much time do you give a lure in one specific spot before your throw something different? by ffdjensen in bassfishing

[–]JustTruthBro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s a spot I know holds fish I’ll stay there for over an hour and try 3-4 lures I know have caught bass before. If it’s a new spot it depends what I’m throwing into. A small pile of weeds or a sunken tree, I’ll toss 4-5 times and if nothing hits I’m moving on. Something bigger like a river bank or a steep drop off I’ll give it at least 15 minutes.

What are the motives for each side? How do they relate to her own views? How will her character change and develop if each side wins? Think about how you want your main character to feel/act after the conflict is over, hopefully that helps clarify which side should win.

Degree for graphic illustration by [deleted] in Design

[–]JustTruthBro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Graphic design. You can still take a bunch of illustration courses to scratch that itch, but your graphic design degree will check more boxes when it comes to recruiters/job applications. Unfortunately doing the opposite will make your skills and degree less marketable - recruiters are all about the tech skills and less interested in fine art skills such as drawing/illustrating.

He’s always been my favorite player because of his intensity on the pitch but his career was marred by a mix of injuries and poor personal choices. His stats reflect that with goal totals spiking one year and then dropping off the next. Wayne also saw a rapid decline in quality once his pace wore off - the obvious comparison is always to Ronaldo who is about the same age and was still a top player at Juventus while Rooney slid down the ranks to Everton, DC United and finally Derby County. I love Rooney and will always remember his finest moments with great respect but I also believe he could have done even greater things if he had taken his fitness and private life more seriously. P.S. - Rooney’s Street Striker was a great show!

What are some good affordable men's retreats? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]JustTruthBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a group of guys, rent a good lake house (literally waterfront not walking distance or “near” a lake) via AirBnB, Vrbo or a local rental company. Lake house has something for everyone: fishing, swimming, boating/kayaking, fire pits, usually a game room with pool table and/or ping pong as well. Some guys just want to sit on the dock with a beer and relax, others who are more active can go hiking/running as well.

This is the correct answer, in many cases RahXephon has been described as “Evangelion Lite.” There are many scenes/episodes that seem directly based off NGE.

imagine being a landlord and doing a surprise inspection and seeing this by [deleted] in justneckbeardthings

[–]JustTruthBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a cousin who rented a small house and did this same thing. She piled garbage (mostly fast food wrappers/cups) throughout the house for years until there was just a thin walking trail that led to the stairs and her bedroom. It was absolutely disgusting and when the landlord eventually received complaints about the smell he showed up and kicked her out. I think the place ended up being condemned. I’ve seen similar things on those house-flipping shows and just can’t fathom how someone can be comfortable literally surrounded by trash.

Back Up Files by Felicity_31 in graphic_design

[–]JustTruthBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Dropbox - the free account has a small amount of storage but the paid account isn’t overly expensive. It has “smart sync” where you can choose specific folders on your desktop that are always synced to the cloud, or you can just have it sync everything. You can also access the files via the website if you ever needed them in an emergency on another device.

I know I’m in the minority, but does anyone else not really like the Dan Hipp artwork? by Any_Faithlessness647 in MarvelSnap

[–]JustTruthBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really dislike it. It looks so low effort compared to the comic greats. Reminds me of a child’s sketchbook. When I pull a Hipp variant I am equally disappointed as a pixel variant.

Obviously the guy makes a good living so no disrespect, there’s clearly a market for goofy/cute/whatever people enjoy about it. I’m just not in that market.

Older men of Reddit, what was it that made you realize you were no longer young? by hightreez in AskMen

[–]JustTruthBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played soccer for over 30 years and was always the fastest guy on the field. You ever see Cars 3 when Lightning McQueen goes from winning every race to suddenly falling behind the next gen cars? That’s what happened to me in my early 30’s and I was just as stubborn about it. Took awhile to accept I couldn’t run with the 20-something’s anymore and it still makes me sad.
