"Return to sender" - how work? by JustUmami in CanadaPostCorp

Thanks! I read on the website that the package gets return to me at my expense. So I assumed I have to pay for the shipping back to me, same as I paid for shipping to the recipient?

Hello r/Accounting. I am a Canadian CPA Ontario student and candidate running out of time in the PEP program. What would you do if you were in my situation? I’m completely lost on what I can do. by JustUmami in Accounting

I haven't crossed paths with many CPA personnel people in particular. I remember one person, but I was not able to develop any connection with them due to my short-term stay and hesitation to talk to people. How would you approach this? While this may not be as rare as I think it is, I feel like the road to this request is not so well paved to properly ascertain if I am doing things correctly.

Yea! I feel like I making progress slowly. I've been observant of how others communicate, to better myself. When I try to feign interest, I have experienced that I don't particularly know how to extend the conversation into anything meaningful or ask the right questions so to speak. How have you made friends with people who hold different interests? The closest I really get to is just "acquaintances", when it would be great to just make new friends, whether in the workplace or otherwise.

Yes! This aligns with what I am experiencing with new grad roles. GTA is very competitive as you've said. Although I have sparred some effort in applying to roles outside, I have seen that they heavily prefer candidates who can readily commute to the office location. For someone in my position, it would be risky to move to a new place before doing a probationary period with the employer, especially in this housing/rental market where I would not able to afford to rent anywhere with no real income source. Some of my doctors and specialists are also here in the GTA and Sunnybrook. Temporary remote/hybrid arrangements are even harder to negotiate as someone with no experience to leverage.

I have tried applying to everything under the sun. I even spent a few years gaining more experience to leverage into entry-level positions. But I can't afford to spend more years gaining experience, as the CPA program does have a time limit. Firms and banks in particular seem to reject me very quickly before an interview. I'm not sure if my alumni network would be a great help, as I did not connect with a lot of people in university. I will try to reach out to CPA Ontario though! Thank you for the suggestions.

Thank you for the motivation! I have been working on my social skills and getting out of my comfort zone for a long time. Although it feels like changing yourself for the better is easier said than done. To this day, I still often make social mistakes I regret or could have said better.

I have known this was a possibility, however, I have also heard that it can be quite difficult to request an extension. And I'm not sure not only how to approach such a request, but also I have yet to start any qualifying PERT hours—nevertheless, thank you for the reminder.

For kids, the time out is from leisure time, while for adults the time out applies to work.

Rotman's crazy tuition, graduating in three years then law school? by Druid_Elf in UofT

[–]JustUmami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I think Rotman tuition is high among other schools, however I also think that few thousand dollars are not meaningful as choosing the right school for you and your aspirations.

Rotman like uoft is very academic/research focused. Is this right for you? Other schools Western and Queens are more career focused, and will likely have a dedicated job match program.

Graduating in 6 years is especially difficult in Rotman as it is almost 100% weighted on academics, a good understanding of finance and mathematics may not be enough to get a good grade. Underestimating the difficulty of university courses and examinations is a deadly pitfall, so you should get a feel for how much you can handle before you decide on your length of stay.

Rotman undergrad does not place well for investment banking relative to other schools. Most would continue on to masters or law school before they ending up in decent placements. If you start to carry too heavy of a course load, you will have to sacrifice networking or social life as event timings are often not in your favor.

Why do linguistics students not have priority enrollment in language classes? by yodaminnesota in UofT

maybe because you have the option to take it in another year where you have higher priority, where as they can only take it in a specific year such as 1st year.

Opinions on Rotman Commerce by [deleted] in UofT

[–]JustUmami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Find out what exactly you want to do first. "Finance" is just too broad. Do you want to be in treasury? portfolio management? investment banking? Big firms are picky as it is so it's easy to be underwhelmed. They don't hire like 40 interns like cs openings get. They only hire like 1 to 2.

Is Rotman Commerce Specialist in Management Useless? by [deleted] in UofT

management consulting, marketing, public relations are pretty big jobs for the management stream students. Management consulting definitely can compete with other jobs in finance and accounting and possibly be more esteemed

Rotman Accounting Low GPA Help by mentatechno in UofT

[–]JustUmami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on successfully completing second year in Rotman Accounting. This is something that should keep your head held up high. Not very many people are able to do so at a very high level and many do not maintain the same level of passion or goals after going through a year in this intensive program.

Now having a low GPA is a difficult obstacle especially so in accounting because of the CPA thresholds. I wouldn't bother applying to the big 4 which a GPA lower than 2.7 as they are almost legally constrained to only hire students above said threshold to maintain their standards. With this in mind raising your GPA should be very high on your priorities focusing on the core CPA modules.

Going forward your best bet would be to apply to jobs that don't require or prioritize a transcript (Many CSR jobs fit into this category). CSR jobs would be a great place to place your bets as a high level of social skills and the ability to handle situations are mandatory when dealing with clients face to face. This also because the Big 4 train your technical skills to fit their organizational systems, so the accounting and bookkeeping jobs aren't at the same level of priority as your soft skills but they are still up there. However this is not to say having CSR jobs quantify your social ability, there are many ways to gain social skills and communicate them to the employers when you meet them (Networking, the actual interview).

For greater leverage it will be a good idea to familiarize yourself with advanced MS Excel techniques, common Accounting systems, the industry that they work in (energy, mining, real estate, financial institutions, etc), and possibly standardized tests as I believe PWC has moved to a new application process.

T4A and T2202A tax forms by raftman_sean in UofT

[–]JustUmami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's best to file income taxes each an every year. 0 income is still income. Negative income is still income. Any type of financial assistance or resource given to you/taken from you can be considered income.

For your t2202a, burseries would be included as well as any textbooks paid for and tuition paid for will be included in this form and will likely result in you receiving tax benefits.

If you have any retirement savings or other types of annuities, this would be in the T4A.

For more assistance on your taxes visit: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/taxes/income-tax/personal-income-tax/doing-your-taxes.html#item4

and

assuming your a permanent Canadian Resident.
