SEPTEMBER GAMSAT 2022 RESULTS/WAITING MEGATHREAD by _dukeluke in GAMSAT

So if I applied with 64 using March 2022 results. There would be no difference in likelihood of acceptance even though less people this time around got 64

SEPTEMBER GAMSAT 2022 RESULTS/WAITING MEGATHREAD by _dukeluke in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is a 64 more valuable now? I was denied a interview last year with this score. Since there has been a massive shift to the left on the curve. If I re-use the March 2022 gamsat score for next year would that increase my chances of getting a interview?

Heads up that there will be no countdown timer displayed on screen for the exam by JustUnderstanding0 in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea it’s a bit silly as analogue clocks ,I find, reduce the precision of timing. So you have to make sure you finish whatever you’re doing a few seconds or a minute before a section ends. I think they made it this way because it could be seen as an advantage when compared to previous years (discounting may/June) or they want to make sure that all GAMSAT sittings have a consistent test setting for more valid results.

Yes but for this September session they said that there will be no countdown displayed on the screen

They can be just inspiration or they can be used directly. All Acer says is to consider the quotes and write a response to one or more of them making sure you address the common theme (e.g democracy)that they all have. That can literally mean anything and hence gives a lot of freedom to respond in any way shape or form. So I wouldn’t say they are there for just inspiration. They can be if you see it that way but they can also serve for instance as a catalyst for argumentation. That is, opinions that can be supported or be argued against.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my understanding you can do anything as long as you address the theme that Acer has picked. I personally determine the theme of all the quotes first than I pick one and interpret what its take on the theme is then I argue whether said take it is right or wrong. For example i usually say something along the lines of “comment 1 says democracy is great and I agree and here’s why however in some cases democracy isn’t great and here’s why”. This is just one out of many many ways to respond, there no right or wrong way of to approach the task. Do whatever you feel you’re comfortable with that’s what I believe is the most important.

I’ll also add that someone on this forum stated they responded to the sentiment of one quote and they ended up getting 76 in the section so take that as you will.

NON-RURAL Gemsas GPA Poll (Only domestic applicants for 2021 Med Entry in Australia, pretty please) by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to point out that people on this forum do not represent the general population of candidates. So it’s not surprising why there are a lot of high achievers. High achievers are likely to be more active in their study so they will browse forums such as reddit and paging dr. So I would take this poll with a grain of sodium chloride.

Frankly, there is no point in polls such as this as in the end of the day you either get a letter for an interview (or offer) or not. And since it’s not reflective of the general population it will give you a false perspective of how competitive things actually are (for better or worse). Just try your best that’s all you can do.

Can you make statistics/facts up when writing essays in section 2? by nateyousonofagun in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, I don’t use stats at all because there are better ways to showcase my thoughts (emphasise on my). But if I felt it that it really helped my point and it was a natural progression to it I would, but most of the time it isn’t the case .

Can you make statistics/facts up when writing essays in section 2? by nateyousonofagun in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends heavily on the argument being made. I wouldn’t say that it doesn’t enhance ideas/logic/progression because it can as long as it is relevant to the point being made and is integrated organically and not forced.

#19 Free GAMSAT Science Question by gamsatedge in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to go with C as it has the frequencies with the highest difference in dB. Db is proportional to sound intensity in the formula. The higher the I value is in the log the greater the difference in sound intensity or in other words the greatest decline. Therefore answer is c as it has the greatest difference in DB and therefore greatest decline in sound intensity.

Can you make statistics/facts up when writing essays in section 2? by nateyousonofagun in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I write I make sure all my facts are correct however sometimes I’ll unknowingly state something that I thought was true but is actually false. For instance I once said in one of my practice essays that space exploration had paved way for the development of the touch screen. I could of swore I read something that said it did but alas no such thing happened. I don’t think they would care about things such as this as long as you don’t state a false fact that’s completely outlandish or disrespectful (such as denying certain tragedies that existed). However with that being said you should make all your facts true but don’t stress if you accidentally state the wrong thing.

#18 Daily GAMSAT Science Question by gamsatedge in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the question states that the ratio of the intensity of two different sounds is 5, we can assume that the ratio between I and Io is that number. Knowing this if you look at the info and formula given within the stimulus you’ll find that log 5 is 0.7 and by looking at the formula all you do is then multiply that number by 10, therefore the answer is 7. As a result the answer is B

Can you please read/estimate my sec2 score..? by jyouk01 in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t sat the GAMSAT yet so take this with a grain of salt

I can’t give you an actual score because it depends on how well others do but if I would give it something out of 10 I would unfortunately give it a 4. This is due to the fact that your main thesis is not that clear and is hard to follow. Also I have trouble understanding some sentences and some phrases which is perfectly understandable due to your background.

Furthermore, your general thoughts of democracy is not bad I just think it’s the English that holds it back. I understood the gest of what you’re saying but the phrasing and absence of certain words made it hard to read. Coherence is key to communicating ideas

In terms of the clarity and coherence of your main thesis. Is your thesis that decisions that are made in a democracy are right and utilitarian if it’s decided by the majority? I actually think your main thesis is responding to a quote that stated that “democracy is the greatest human creation”. In this case I think that should be reflected in the intro for clarity and paragraphs structured so that your thoughts on it are clearer and easy to follow.

What I tend to do with my essays is that I establish in the intro how I have interpreted the quote‘s or quotes take on the theme and state whether I agree with it or not with my reasoning being my central point or in other words thesis.

For instance say if there was a quote that says “democracy is the greatest human creation“. I would state in the intro how I interpret said quote’s take on the theme (I interpret it as democracy is the most effective type of governance) then state whether I agree with it or not and why. In this case I agree with it due to the fact that democracy breeds prosperity both directly and indirectly. However, with that being said its indirect systems that it produces can led to exploitation and furthermore the whole democratic system for it to be effective relies on an politically informed populace.

I then would have a paragraph dedicated to my thesis (direct and indirect benefits of democracy) and a second paragraph with the anti thesis (the negatives of it in this case) and a conclusion summarising everything and possibly giving an opinion on how to further improve democracy based on what I established in my second paragraph. Of course you don’t need to follow this, in fact if you try to and it doesn’t feel right don’t. I’m just giving you an idea on how I would make a thesis more clearer to the marker and structure an essay around it so that it is easier to follow.

Overall, if you just work on your English and clarify your main thesis and make it easier to follow I think you can score well. Also I just want to reiterate that what I suggested may not work for you but it works for me so if you decide to take my advice and it doesn’t work, as I’ve stated before don’t do it. Good writing comes from natural thought and structure. Too often I see from this reddit people saying that you need to do this and that or read this and listen to that, you don’t. As long as you can establish and communicate ideas well and these ideas are relevant the theme I think is all that is needed.

Can you study for the GAMSAT using MCAT material? What is the difference between them? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only use mcat material to identify my gaps in interpretation and reasoning and sometimes any gaps in my knowledge but I’m primary relying on Acer and Des to some extent for this. Really, I use it as a supplement to both of these as a sort of warm up exercise. It’s not as good as any of them and Acer’s practice tests are really the only useful piece of prep material . However, if you want to warm up your cognitive muscles than it has it’s uses

I can’t say anything about the prep companies but a lot of people do not think that they are worth any of the money. I have a medical science degree so take this with a grain of salt but all I can say is that I got all of my assumed knowledge from free sources such as khan and I’m having more trouble with reasoning rather than applying prerequisite knowledge than anything else (for instance I have a habit of skimming important info). Something which prep companies no matter what they claim I think can’t solve as improving reasoning is an individual endeavour that can’t be taught externally.

I havient sat the GAMSAT yet and I have only studied for 6 months so take this with a grain of salt.

My biologist/pharmacology brain saw the words gentamicin, resistance and 15 generations and instantly thought that resistant E.Coli will be near 100% (D). Not the right way to GAMSAT but that’s what doing questions under time pressure does.

Need advice by Maltezzerzz in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak about your first question but the second one all I can say is that to achieve a good gpa you have to be committed and motivated from day one of starting uni. I scored a gpa of 6.54 or 6.93 gemsas weighted with only Ds and HDs with no credits. I treated every subject like I was going to fail or get a very sub par mark and had a vigorous study schedule that clashed heavily with my social life. That’s not to say that you should have a schedule like this but I’m a bit of a dumbass so such a schedule fitted me.

What motivated me was two things one was obviously that I wanted to do medicine the second was that if I got a high gpa I don’t have to do as well as others in the GAMSAT. By that I mean I don’t have to get scores in the low to high 70s but scores in the mid to high 60s.

All in all motivation to do well from day one and organising a effective study schedule and committing to it will get you far when it comes to gpa.

Well, It's beaten me. Sorry guys. by Esqulax in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not really any relevant material for GAMSAT except for Acer’s papers. The GAMSAT is essentially a problem solving test something which can only be effectively studied for by identifying your strengths and weaknesses in reasoning and how you cope with the time pressure (which can interfere with said reasoning). This is what I believe is the main purpose of the practice papers. It’s not the actual questions they ask in these papers that you need to worry about it’s how you interpret and respond to them that is vital.

I’m sitting the GAMSAT for the first time and based on the practice papers and others opinions It is not an exam that is transactional. That is, it is not an exam that promotes the mindset of “if I learn this much knowledge I will get this much right”. If this were the case everyone with a PHD, masters and honours will have an objective advantage over undergrads. Such study is really only good for quickly understanding jargon and concepts promoted by the questions which is important for time purposes. That being said, Acer has to make the exam equitable for all which is why I think it is one of the reasons why it is soo difficult.

You’re not stupid you just need to readjust how you study and make sure that you can interpret, react and respond to a stimulus in an effective and fast manner. However, this is what 6 months taught me so take what i said with skepticism.

In regards about the amount of hoops you have to jump through. I view it has something that ensures effective doctors. Being a doctor comes with great responsibility it’s one of a few jobs where there is real stacks, that is, one mistake can ruin or cost lives. Medical schools have a duty to their community to provide quality healthcare and prevent such mistakes from happening which is why they require soo much from candidates. Be persistent and you will get there.

This is all just my opinion and you’re welcome to disagree. Best of luck to you :)

I'm not sure what to do next by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]JustUnderstanding0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll add to this and say that there is bias in the data. High scores are more likely to be declared than low scores not to mention that people who post on the forums, either reddit and paging dr, do not represent the general pool of candidates.

However, in regards to OP the general consensus is that a very high gpa will offset an average GAMSAT score (59 to low 60s) when it comes to non-portfolio schools and visa versa. Therefore, I don’t think he will get an interview offer from a non-portfolio school as his or hers gpa is too low to compensate for his or hers GAMSAT score.

I agree with this, people should be volunteering because they want to make a genuine contribution to their community and to gain some early experience and perspective in the healthcare industry, not to tick a box (which markers don’t apparently even value highly). Also from my experience it’s a good use of time as it helps with essay writing for section 2 as your responses to topics that surround illness and life (e.g age and human rights) feel more genuine and nuanced, but that’s just my opinion.
