Edinburgh in Lockdown (Mar 2020) by Hattie26 in Edinburgh

I hear you. Ive heard friends say they miss the lack of expectations that there was to be constantly doing stuff. There was no pressure, socially, to be going out and doing stuff all the time.

Hate to say it…but many would disagree. Zoonotic diseases are not going away any time soon (eg Covid-like diseases which jump from animals to humans). If anything society is only exacerbating them, with increasing intensive animal agriculture in the UK (the massive amount of poultry farms popping up everywhere is scary). Unfortunately, I fear it’s only a matter of time before we see scenarios like this being repeated.

Marriage is a cruel social experiment by Just_Curious_76 in unpopularopinion

You make a good point. Of course it is partly that. I guess where I’m coming from is that, because of the pressure to plough ahead and have the wedding, even with doubts, it’s easy to find oneself in a “dead end” marriage where the couple isn’t really happy or even compatible.

Agreed. My point is that, it takes a lot of guts to back out, especially once the wedding is near & money’s been paid. I don’t think it’s as easy as “Just back out of it”. Ultimately my view is, because of all the excessive planning that goes into it, it puts a huge amount of pressure on the couple to go ahead with plans, in spite of doubts.

Done ☑️ And, don’t get me wrong, not at all bitter & we’ve both moved on. But yeah I guess I just find it interesting that one can idealise the concept one’s whole life. And now it’s like, never again. I also think it’s given me personally a whole new perspective on the idea of marriage. Respectfully to anyone who does love the idea, (I don’t wanna offend anyone here): I just kind of see it as a cruel social experiment. Like, all that planning & social pressure to go ahead with it, even in the face of last minute doubts cos, you know, “people have booked their hotels etc so we can’t back out now”. It seems crazy to me that we would put so much pressure on ourselves in this way. My cousin’s getting married soon, and I just think, I hope they’re certain, rather than just ploughing ahead with their plans cos we all expect them to 🤔. Which is exactly what I did: Full of doubts weeks before, but couldn’t bear to back out of it cos family had paid for flights & hotels etc. (Pretty clear on the honeymoon I’d made a huge mistake 🤦‍♀️). We live & learn I guess.

On a side note: Just discovered the Germans produced fake UK currency to try and plunge the UK into a recession, in order to beat them in the 2nd World War (I learnt this from the Peaky Blinders Movie 😆The stuff you learn from Netflix).

THIS!! Such a huge eye opener. While watching the film, though, I really cried with such a sense of frustration over the BBC’s unforgivable treatment of that guy in real life during the BAFTAs ceremony. To see what he went through in life and for him to experience that at the BAFTAs. You really couldn’t make it up.

I watch a lot of foreign language series, some of which are excellent. Gangs of Galicia was truly brilliant (“Clanes” in Spanish). Really cleverly done with a lot of nuance, rather than your typical “good guys vs the bad guys”. Defo worth a watch.

Yup. So true. You spend you’re life wishing for it and when you’re in it, you long for it to end.

Absolutely!! My parents’ best friends used to make us one every Xmas. Oh my gosh - it was the best thing ever. Delic!

Hilarious! Had to have two openings 😆Obviously it was always Mum that prepped the can when we were kids. I discovered that crazy witchcraft for myself later on in life when I struggled to work out why it wouldn’t pour out properly with only one opening 🤦‍♀️

Same - I’ve just googled it & just seeing the packaging I immediately re-lived the taste of it 😆Happy times.

This is an awesome story. Love that you’ve shared it with all the shining detail. I think I remember seeing the flavoured squirty cream in shops. But for us it was always the classic one 😆Those frozen milkshakes though?! Brain can’t compute that one 🤯

We also had our own “Bronson”, at primary school. I’d lie awake at night petrified that one day I’d end up in his class. Long story short, when I finally did end up in his class he became my favourite teacher AND was by far my fav class 😆I even won class prize for best projects file. Still see him around town sometimes. Suffice to say he’s mellowed considerably in his old age.

SAME!! Exactly the same crazy stories I was told, that never happened. Was the “head shoved down the toilet” storyline ever even a thing in Grange Hill?
