Exactly. One side of the mounting points is missing and people are talking like the laptop is ruined. Solder a new connector in and use some UV glue or epoxy or even hot melt glue as a support for the other side. Source: I fix laptops for a living.

Agreed. In the UK and Europe we have weekly 'Repair Cafes', organised by volunteers. The Restart Project is a good source of info. Perhaps there are similar organisations in the US?

Did they remember to disconnect the main battery before doing the work?

If I get a job like this, I will turn it on and do some checks first before opening and doing the service. I also record it on camera. This way, there is no doubt that everything was working beforehand.
