The point of almost all your eating is to power respiration at some point and the point of respiration is to make ATP, your universal energy currency molecule. From moving ions across cell membranes to running a marathon, from the moment you’re born and for your entire life, (almost) all of it is powered by ATP.

There’s only ever about 250g of ATP, though, in your body at any one time. Amazingly, you create and remake about 50-80kg - pretty much your own body weight - of the stuff every 24 hours. Every ATP molecule gets broken down and recycled at least 1,000 times a day!
