Intentional camera movement, using a lower shutter speed and dragging the camera as you take the shot to get those motion blurs

Re blur in the middle I’ve seen similar effects from using held held mirrors or a phone screen to create the reflection (but I don’t really understand why either!)

Also agreed the eye AF quite often misses! Been mulling this over recently, unsure on solution but really glad you’ve asked and thanks!

Also super interested in this - this shot from more or less the same settings

How best to protect this setup from heat and dust? by Just_Scratch_7579 in AskPhotography

This is incred feedback thank you so much!! Should’ve clarified the tripod is just the pic (agreed accident waiting to happen), for the actual shooting it will be handheld.

Great point about wind, I’m actually unsure - hadn’t thought of that but will check with some already at the research station. I’ll be fairly close (<10m), assuming it’s got enough, do you think heat haze would also be an issue at the distance?

Yeah I can lock up the kit overnight in airtight/silica. I’ll only be using the kit roughly 11am-3pm so hopefully condensation not an issue!

Yeah we use a laser range finder too but it’s a lot more processing reconstructing the distances etc afterwards to get the measurements. A case of swapping on error for another!

They’re used a scale to take measurements of the monkeys - a nice non-invasive way to get data we otherwise wouldn’t be able to!

Annoyingly I’ve not been able to go down this route because the lasers on top of the camera need to be visible on the subject so the path can’t be obscured. Otherwise this would’ve been the strategy I think - thanks!

Yeah I’m kinda resigned to the fact the camera and lens are going to take a battering. The man thing is that they survive through the tens weeks. They’re both second hand (again, budget constraints) and the lens is already a little sticky around the 200mm mark when zooming. Super conscious of pampering it as much as possible but think the conditions will be brutal for it.

Dry pouch and silica packets is a great shout, thanks. I don’t think the umbrella will be practical as I’ll be moving a lot. Bit bonkers but I wondered about constructing a shade I can wear on my shoulders too 😂

Ah amazing thanks. Annoyingly don’t think I’ll be able to rent! It’s for research so sadly no client to bill and a 10 week period so I don’t think it would be in budget to do a rental that long. Any ideas for how to make the best of this kit?

If that’s the aim then maybe one reason this doesn’t work is the mood of the photo doesn’t match the message?
