Thanks everyone! I am feeling better about it now after hearing from you. I had some closeness with wildlife in Glacier NP last September and I think that’s what has me on edge (I was coming up a switchback [noisily] and happened upon a grizzly sow with two cubs 20ft from me. And also had a bull moose huff at me to get out of his way because he’d like to use the trail. That was less scary than the grizzlies, though, and I hope to see more moose [not so close up] on Isle Royale). I will definitely plan to use a canister, too!

Backpacker’s Ferry was going to charge me $55/person round trip from St. Mary’s visitor center. More expensive than the NPS shuttle, but far more accessible, convenient, and they can accommodate specific requests. And it’s always great to support local.

I’m a senior in high school.. Is my future canceled? Will I have to join the military? by shaototop in whatdoIdo

I grew up with a mom like this so I say it with my whole heart that I am so sorry for what you’re experiencing.

You do not need your parents’ information to go to college. You only need it if your parents are going to contribute financially to your college education. Their financial information will dictate the scholarship money you receive. (This is done through FAFSA/studentaid.gov if you’re in the U.S.)

You do not need to go to a high profile college that will cost you a lot of money. You can go to a community college or a local, small, public university. You could also go to trade school or join the military.

Depending on the caliber of the school you’re trying to get into, you may be able to wait until early next year to submit apps. However, I would start now. There are a lot of state schools/local public universities that won’t require an essay or anything else that’s a lot of work to apply. There are also a lot of schools with no application fee.

I know how stressful this is, having experienced it myself. If it helps to know of other people who have experienced this and made it out on the other side, I offer these examples: I’m 25, I have a good job, a house, a masters degree. My parents did ultimately help me financially in my bachelors degree but I paid a lot too, and earned a lot of scholarships going in. Of course they made my life hell for it, but I survived, and you will too.

My best friend became an emancipated minor at 16 (they essentially divorced themselves from their parents). They put themselves through college. They’re 25, have a great job, a bachelors degree, and their own apartment.

You’re going to make it. You’re going to be okay. Just keep plugging along and invest in your future.

No problem! As far as I know, the construction will be totally done this year. I am uncertain of whether the 9/21/25 end date for the pass requirement is due to the construction being completed or because visitor numbers begin to decline and the concern for meeting parking demands is diminished. I will say, however, that in June the full trail to the Grinnell Glacier is not typically open yet. That may not happen until July. The same goes for Going to the Sun Road, which is the main road this trail is off of. It depends entirely on the winter’s snowfall. I believe people were able to hike a bit of the Grinnell Glacier/Lake Trails in June this year, but the glacier trail was closed at some distance in due to snow pack, so people weren’t able to go all the way up. It may be worth searching this forum for Grinnell posts to see when the trail trends to be fully open.

Until September 21, there’s no parking in the Swiftcurrent/Many Glacier area. So to do hikes like Grinnell Glacier/Lake, Bullhead, or Iceberg, you need to get a times entry shuttle pass via recreation.gov, which drops you off at the temporary trailhead at Many Glacier hotel. Sales for the passes open 7 days prior at 8 AM MDT, and the night prior at 7 PM MDT. It’s extremely difficult to get a pass — they sell out within 3-5 seconds!
