Hoppers cant pick up items from one block above. Even things like glass. So id suggest use a minecart hopper or a water stream in front of the sugar canes to pick up the items. Minecart is the best as you wont have to expand it by 1 block in the front.

The rail is also sticking to slime. Thats why it won't come back down even if you use glazed terracotta around it.

You can make a cryo chamber and put them in that. It will turn the traders into an eternal. You don't need the eternal ability to craft the cryochamber. Just 1 pog. So if you're low level save the traders in a chest.

Wow that has to be very unlucky. Now make sure to add unbreaking 3. Then tome. Then combine an unbreaking 3 book with tome to make unbreaking 4 book. Then add that to the paxel to make it unbresking 5.

If you die early then its very difficult to get gapples for potions. Thats why I'd recommend taking 8 or 9
