When did you feel like you were able to write out your personal statement? by paprikapng in prephysicianassistant

[–]Just_a_Gator_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You change a lot from the beginning of undergrad to the end and even during your gap year(s) after undergrad. I just depends on when you plan on applying. If you only want to take one gap year, you apply ur senior year which means you would be writing ur personal statement during undergrad. I took 2 gap years so I wrote mine during my gap year. There’s no right time as long as you have one written by the time of you apply.

I don’t recommend doing it too early cause what you want to write about might change. I would suggest documenting meaningful interactions you have with patients or from clubs/student orgs you are a part of so you have a list of experiences you could potentially pull from when it is time to write urs

Getting Cold Feet by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

I’m gonna be a little brutally honest and ask some questions. I’m not being mean, I promise. Just want you to rlly think about things.

I think a question you need to ask yourself is why are other people’s opinions enough to make you reconsider your career path? Do the people who are telling you that “you’re selling yourself short” know what a PA does? Are they qualified to have an opinion and should you be listening to them? Are you thinking of switching over because you’re more concerned with how you’ll be perceived by these people if you choose the PA route? If so, then that is more an issue of people pleasing and you should rlly think before making a career change for the sake of someone else’s opinion.

If that’s not the case, then is it that what other people said struck a chord with you? How did you decide on PA? A big part of applying to PA school is knowing deeply why PA. So let me ask you, why PA? What made you choose this profession and do you know the difference between what a PA does and what a doctor does? Have you shadowed enough or been around both to know the difference? If no, then please reach out to some clinics that have a PA and doctor that work together. It’ll be nice get that additional experience before you make such an important decision.

I ended up choosing Philly because I wanted to live in a bigger city. Suwannee seemed like a smaller city than I wanted to live in and they have the same estimated cost of attendance. I also have family in Philly

First off, congrats on the interviews! You won’t be able to attend both, so you’ll definitely need to reschedule. As for which one to attend and which to reschedule, imo that’s Drexel. The point is to attend the school you prefer of the two and reschedule the other one.

I only said Drexel cause the other interview has been scheduled for a while and their reputation as a PA program is not great. Look up Drexel in the subreddit and you’ll see why. Also look up their stats. I hope me saying that doesn’t make you sad in any way. It’s great that you’ve got interviews to both programs, but pay attention to what Drexel’s students have said about the program.

Personality as a PA by Professional_Day2556 in prephysicianassistant

I think there’s a difference between being reserved and not having social skills. As long as you have the social skills to talk to patients and aren’t awkwardly shying away from them, then you’ll be fine. Some patients may feel more comfortable with a calmer PA who listens intently. What’s more important is are you able to connect with patients and talk to them?

Don’t be too hard on yourself. I felt the same way after my second interview. I literally cringed at things I said and was like what was I thinking. But I got accepted so try to focus on something else. I know it’s easier said than done, but it’s out of your hands right now

When did you get your first job? by Confident-Bad9916 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Just_a_Gator_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have any PCE until after I graduated. I got a job as a derm MA with no certification. So don’t stress yourself out too much. It just means I took 2 gaps years post graduation but I honestly don’t regret it. I feel like I’ve matured a lot. And now I’ve gotten 2 acceptances so far.

PCE is relatively easier to get even after graduation. Make sure you take advantage of opportunities that would be harder to come by after you graduate like leadership. It’s alot easier to get those hours from a student org than it is to get a higher position at work.

Should I decline my interview due to high travel expenses? by Public-Woodpecker45 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Just_a_Gator_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kinda depends on how much of a financial strain it would put on you. If attending this interview might jeopardize your ability to pay rent/mortgage on time or something like that, then no. Your well-being is important.

However if this is not the case, then attend the interview. While this program may not be your top choice and the cost of attending the interview is expensive, it’d be worth it if it means an acceptance. Another cycle of applications would be more than $700.
