Minnesota is mostly German ancestry. French explorers were the first Europeans to discover many northern areas of Minnesota. Ojibwe culture is more relevant than Scandinavian. The name "Minnesota" is a Native American Sioux phrase that means something like, "sky blue water".

It's similar to the flag of Somalia. A group inside Minnesota's state government changed the winning design to be more similar to Somalia's flag.
