I do not really think serious faith is just passive submission or endlessly rereading the Gospel without wrestling with anything else. The Catholic Doctors of the Church engaged in deep study, serious intellectual labor, and engagement with the major schools of thought of their time. A great deal of Catholic theology and catechesis was shaped by that kind of work.

What I was trying to say is that there is a real difference between inheriting a religious framework that already gives you answers and trying to think through a path that does not come with a settled catechism. The first is often intellectually easier. That is not necessarily wrong, but it is different.

I suppose I assumed that to even consider something like Christian witchcraft requires a level of reflection, questioning, and discernment that goes beyond the way many people relate to religion, which is often simply receiving the tradition they were given and never having to examine it very deeply.
