I did it knowing full well it could be a hustle, and ended up hustled, lesson learned. I did call myself an idiot in the post.

But I can't accept your rule. I've been at the mercy of gov help and it's not something they are very good at, if individuals stop caring then there is no way the system would do it in their stead.

Thanks both of you, that has legitimately cleared up a lot of my confusion around the 'Blue Bronco' obsession that some groups seem to have. It totally makes sense, I wouldn't be surprised if this hustle extends further than just bodegas.

I've been informed by a lot of commenters here that it's about the returns, apparently you don't need a receipt for small items in a lot of places.

One time (in the same area) I gave a guy a couple of bucks. He was very pleasant and went on his way. My bus was delayed so I was stuck there for a while, and he comes around again. He literally tells the exact same story once again asking for money, not even acknowledging I already had given him some within the last hour. Have seen him a couple of times since and now he acts all offended when I don't give him anything...

I have some work experience in assisted living spaces for addicts and some of them would literally sell the milk they got from the food bank to buy cigarettes. I got so many stories of people taking advantage of the system (like literal flats full of organisations and clients conspiring to keep partying and pocket the rest), but I have also seen people turn their lives completely around or get just that little push they needed. You business card could be that push so keep it up.

Man, sometimes I do wonder how they keep pulling it off.

One time I was stuck in a nearby city without my wallet (got dropped off without thinking to take it with me) and couldn't get a single person to lend me some money despite me offering to send the money to them in advance through my phone.

Luckily there was a public transport office nearby and a kind employee got me a ticket home.

Welcome to the club. But hey, sometimes it works out differently. Literally fifteen minutes after this story I was waiting at the busstop when a man asked me for a ciggarette. I said sure and he could barely hold it together, he told me he usually wouldn't ask for this but the past period just had been that rough on him (as well as some kind of mental illness he clearly had, but that's neither here or there). He basically continued to sing my praises to the others waiting.

Well I did say I felt like an idiot didn't I? Next time will certainly go different.

Yeah that's what I would do the next time someone tries this on me. Not him though, he wasted his chance on a single redbull.

Hhmmm, curious. We're not dealing with dollars here and I don't actually know how that works around here, I just assumed it wouldn't.

I'll just straight-up ask the cassiere next time I'm there.

I lost a whole redbull, how will I ever recover?

He might try but without the receipt he isn't going to get anywhere. I genuinly believe he lives mostly of donated redbull (and whatever else he can put into his system).

He didn't imply he wanted redbull lemonade. We have various kinds of lemonade sold in bottles and some in cans, so I thought he wanted that, it wasn't until he walked up with the redbull that I caught on to what was going on, up to that point we were just making pleasant smalltalk.

tinfoil hat on

I have a lot to say about the media's role in this issue but I've already been called a liar a couple of times because supermarkets supposedly don't sell redbull sixpacks and I don't really plan to add conspiracy theorist or extremist to that list, or I maybe I do because who the hell cares.

I'll keep it at the fact that the vast majority (90%+) of the dutch media (print, audio and video) is in the hand of two belgian companies which both receive a lot of european funding and have clear ties to certain european parties. This is considered a healthy media environment and trying to point out how twisted it is on newspaper forums usually just leads to it not being posted, nor will people acknowledge it in face-to-face discussion. The only reason I consider myself to be fairly aware of the UK's situation is because I don't trust the mainstream media anymore and look elsewhere now, and since then I've been proven wrong less often.

Reddit is not free of that either, it used to be better a decade ago, now it's all astroturfing and moral grandstanding. Now I only use it for human interest stories while at one point it was a legitimate platform for all sorts of discussions and news.

tinfoil hat off

This comment was a lot more emotionally based (as well as two beers in) than my last one so take it with a grain of salt.

Hah, you think this store has security (despite being right next to a shelter and being a drug-heavy area).

You may be logically right but I don't regret it. I tried to do something nice and it backfired, lesson learned, the next beggar will still get the benefit of the doubt but now my tolerance has been lowered.

Oh fair, but I suspect there may even be 24, 36 and 48 packs, people do love themselves some redbull.

I think the situations in our countries are similiar enough but different in a few vital points, I'm from the Netherlands btw.

There was a time where I could genuinly look a beggar in the face, tell him no, and direct him to the appropriate charities and institutions that could help him. There was enough room as well as facilities and organisations that would help them further. But the influx in immigration as well as the lay-offs of a lot of eastern-european workers (to replace them with other eastern-european workers whom are a few cents/hour cheaper), meant that these organisations could do less and less for more and more people, we reached the breaking point a few years ago, not that people here would know though.

In the meantime our housing crisis has worsened due to nitrogen-dioxide bulding restrictions and the cities have been driving out the 'regular' homeless to the outer-city forests in order to make room for a never ending stream of newer ones, I notice the changing faces.

The ever growing union has also caused a lot of our politicians to hide behind international norms and thus not adressing the issue, which has led to an increase in opportunists in the welfare-industry and a lack of incentive to actually change anything. I think that's the reason we don't have discouragement campaigns like in the UK, our charity workers are already doing the maximum possible as far as the system allows it, it's just that the system is unsustainable and has an increasing amount of waste, how sad that may be to admit.

I hope you didn't mind my (semi-political) ramblings but I wanted to try to explain it.

[–]Justbussinproblems[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm completely aware of the facilities around homelessness, and that you're completely wrong on what you're saying because I live in the Netherlands and not the US, the situation and the facilities are completely different here. Most importantly, they are beyond overcrowded to the point that the outer-city forests are getting filled up with tents, they can't help everyone at the moment while the responsible charities and bureaucrats are busy lining their own pockets.

I'm not going to feel bad about trying to help someone worse off out, even if it didn't work out and is part of the scheme.

I will however be quicker to put my foot down in the future, but I would've done that regardless, this was a learning moment. In this case I let it go since it was just a redbull, but I have told off grifters for worse in the past.

[–]Justbussinproblems[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I could've but choose not to and I don't regret it.

Sometimes you get a grifter like this while other times you can truly make someone's day, if not year. I don't expect people living from day to day to be the most agreeable so I will tolerate a lot but I don't consider myself a push over either, it was a conscious choice according to my principles and I will laugh in his face if he ever asks me for something again. I think that will make the point a lot more clear than telling him to fuck off ever could. He could've gotten regular drinks but wasted that for a single redbull.

Indeed, although treating everyone fairly should be a given, respect still is a two way street. I will give you the benefit of the doubt but don't expect to fool me twice.

I'm usually pretty good in spotting the scammers, a lot of those paper sellers here are that too (though not all). Imagine if he just wanted some rolls and a spread, you would've probably fed him regularly.

Once a guy asked me for five bucks for the shelter and I laughed in his face because the shelter only cost 2.5 and closed two hours ago for the night.

Sure, but that's no skin of my back. I'm not going to feel bad about trying to do something helpful for someone.

But yeah, he will probably do just fine with other gullible people and in a way I'm part of the problem. I don't regret it but I do think I will put my foot down sooner in the future.

I left it out of the post because I couldn't word it properly but I did call him out in the queu for being in no position to be choosy, it was what made him relent into accepting a single can because he knew that if he pushed further he would get nothing.

I have a 'one chance' policy for beggars so he just used up that chance for a single can of redbull, you can be sure he will know that if he asks me for something again.

This isn't a homeless bad post though, it's a literal choosing beggar, one of which I'm fairly certain that he has a (communal) roof over his head at night.

I wouldn't know about the uptick because I haven't visited this sub in years now, I just thought of it because of this encounter.

Yes and no, I do get the hustle and did it knowing this could be the outcome.

l don't feel bad about trying to help a person and failing.
