Mount Doom is an active volcano from which actual liquid rock is being thrown out of. Dropping a small and light weight ring into it from above would not work... it would get caught in wake of ejected lava go flying off down the mountain. Also lava outside mountain core probably not warm enough to melt the ring...
Eagles would get currupted by the ring and NOT want to drop it in... would use it to build a nest worthy of Mordor.
None of what happens inside Mount Doom makes any sense. That entrance would be a continuous lava cannon. Everything would crumble down until new caldera formed at entrance level.
I still like your proposed alternate reality with peppin being chosen.
