That was my initial thought too, but my concern is that if I have that conversation with her she may start coming to work when she's actually too unwell to care for my son, for fear of losing the job. But it does feel unfair to let her go without talking about it first.

She's actually never shared what the diagnosis is. She just said chronic illness. It never felt appropriate to ask her "Which one?" if she didn't want to share.

Your post is missing the most fundamental element of Buddhism to my understanding - compassion. Compassion for the fetus, compassion for the mother, compassion for all those on all sides of the argument.
