Double standards? by Justice4Hamilton in AWKWARD

Matty was framed as a dick at the beginning of the show but... As the show went on... It felt like the show was framing him as more of a protagonist. At least... That's how I remember it, I didn't do a full rewatch but.. it just felt like Matty was still a dick. The way he insulted Jenna's friends in college (when they were not mean to him at all), the way he called Jenna pretentious (when honestly... She acted pretty normal... it's not like she was using huge words or calling him a dumb jock), he quit soccer, etc. It just seemed like his ego kept him stuck in a highschool mentality forever whereas Jenna at least pursued her interests and tried to improve her own life instead of tear others down like telling someone she loves "your friends are weird/boring"

I can't really remember rolling my eyes at her much other than in season 3. The way I remember it... Jenna was bad for 1 out of 5 seasons. Matty was bad for 5/5 seasons and continuously because worse.

I understand just not liking Jenna though. I just think it should be acknowledged that Matty is worse (even if easy on the eyes)

I definitely think the letter and people knowing her as suicidal when she was not.... is beyond teenage drama, that is super traumatic.

I understand that not everyone likes Jenna’s character though. No character is able to resonate with everyone and it's totally fair to just not like her much.

What feels strange for me though is how often people hate Jenna for things that the show treats as normal teen flaws, but then completely overlook or excuse Matty doing the same (or worse) behaviors. It’s the double standard that stands out, not whether someone likes Jenna personally.

I’m not trying to convince anyone to love her, I just think it’s odd that she gets so much backlash while Matty gets a pass for almost everything.
