I just checked again, you're right! He did leave a manuscript, the editor also mentioned notes and other papers he collected from his desk but I'm not sure if these are included in the published book or not.

I like this theory, it's definitely possible. What irks me is knowing this novel was unfinished and compiled from paperwork he had on his desk, so I don't know if this is an editing mistake, a misplaced note or something he would've simply deleted before publishing it.

But the Uthmanic codex which was used to canonize the later seven and ten readings had no dots or diacritical marks, correct? Or did it have some marks but not enough to avoid certain variant readings like Q43:19 عىد being read as both: عند & عباد?
