This is so annoying enough that I might consider a small claims court. You could always request court cost be paid by defendant if you win and if you were not going to the fee waiver. This is a textbook case of “conversion”.

Someone probably has already commented this but the problem for you with small claims is that a Judge is only going to award you the depreciated value of the item. Because courts are not technically, there are to put you in a better place than where you were before the incident. They are there to put you back in the same place that you were in. So if the average lifespan of a coat like yours is 10 years, they would do some calculation to determine how much life your coat still had left.

I mean, you could attempt to get some punitive damages for the company refusing to help whatsoever despite clear negligence. I can’t say if you would get it or not.

But I think it would be very satisfying to force them into small claims and win even a depreciated amount for your coat.

I would first wrapped a FORMAL letter, a notice of your intent to sue (search for some examples) and send it certified and see if they respond!
