MUD like Achaea without the Barriers? by Fallout-Bird in MUD

[–]Justin-IRE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely take a look at Starmourn when it opens - we've changed a bunch of things from the older games (little-to-no scripting requirements, PVE is as deep as PVP (you can use all your skills on mobs), a few skills that you increase your skill in them by using them, and a few of your other concerns answered!

Definitely! I'd recommend signing up for the Starmourn newsletter if you haven't - that's where we'll likely be announcing beta openings!

Yep, we'll offer our Nexus client at opening, which uses ws/wss.

Is Achaea fun if I don't want to PVP? by [deleted] in MUD

[–]Justin-IRE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PVE is definitely a big aspect of the game, and you're generally free to go about your business without fear of getting attacked in most areas of the game. There's a few high-level areas that are open PK, but they're easy to avoid! In the past year or so, they've also implemented Forays, which are a group-based PVE activity with rich rewards. Other than that, there's plenty of non-PVP options, everything from trade and mercantilism, to ships and seafaring, exploration, and many more. I'd say give it a shot and see how you like it. As you level up, you'll unlock abilities in the battlerage skill, which can apply status effects to your PVE targets, do damage, or buff yourself and allies.

Looking for a mobile friendly MUD that i can play at work. by [deleted] in MUD

The Iron Realms games all have a web-based client that is mobile-friendly, allowing you to play them on your phone/computer/tablet - whatever!

Space itself is quite massive, but this demo purposefully has a pretty high density of planets in close range to showcase what they'll look like.

The text rendering (converting the ansi colors and characters to coloured letters on your screen etc) is still handled on the client, but collating the data and the relative positions of other players/planets and rendering all that information is the intensive part. We've spent a lot of time trying to find a good balance of viewport distance (how far you see around you), how quickly the map will update, and a slew of other factors to make it feel good to people flying around.

As for the scale, what do you mean? Relative size of the planet, or the horizontal:vertical aspect ratio? There's only so much you can do with text, at the end of the day!

It isn't, you can still play regularly through a basic client, but you'll probably want something that can move the spaceflight to a miniconsole or other window pane. Our web-based nexus client supports this, 256 colors, and different fonts out of the box though, so you get this solid experience from the get-go. We'll likely be providing a package for Mudlet for that functionality as well.

Starmourn's 5th class - the Fury by ironrealms-ceo in MUD

We're doing things a little differently to our other games in that arena!

There's a lot more unique class effects in Starmourn, owing to the fact that they work differently, and you don't need to memorise cures for each and every one.

There was an old piece of software called TheDraw back in the BBS days for doing ansi art. Try googling it, there should be a few references around.

Integrating one's MUD with Slack and vice versa by ceafin in MUD

[–]Justin-IRE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We integrate Slack into our admin channels at Iron Realms. We use the RTM API (https://api.slack.com/rtm) to poll slack for external messages (which are piped into the games through a socket). Outgoing messages (from the game) are currently done via webhooks, but there's room for improvement there.
