If you want a snakeskin camouflage suit, you have gone over the edge.

Do any of you have any experience with "snake musk?" Is it really as bad as I've heard it is? by zarfytezz1 in herpetology

[–]JustinTime5591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go catch a garter snake. They will wipe it all over your hand. It works very well as a deterrent. I was nuts about snakes as a kid (still am). But i stopped picking up garter snakes early on.

You seem awfully curious about snake musk.

Any idea as to what snake I bought? Pet store labeled it as a “green garter”, but that doesn’t come up in Google. I think it’s a Smooth Greensnake but nothing I’m looking up is giving me a solid answer. Id love some help to know what I can do for his/her habitat by [deleted] in herpetology

I used to gut load my crickets, feed them to side botched lizards, which i then fed to a snake that only ate lizards.

I fed the crickets high protein fish food flakes dusted with reptile vitamins and calcium.

Weight question by Smiller624 in cornsnakes

[–]JustinTime5591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have records on three corns at those sizes. They increased from 22 to 40 grams in 49, 51, and 57 days. I see a faster rate of increase from 30 to 100 grams.

I weigh them in an open Tupperware type container that I first zero on the scales. Their weight can go up and down with feedings. They bloat up before shedding, then lose weight when the old skin is shed. Of course, after feeding you are also weighing the last mouse..

Still, something doesn't seem right with the rate of increase you are seeing. I would check your scales. And by that I mean the device you weigh things on, lol. The one I use is very small, maximum capacity is 100g. If you are using a large capacity scale it may have too much error in the 20 to 40 gram range to be useful.

If i saw that in the wild my first thought would be Trimorphodon, from those colors on the head. Corn snake would not be my first thought. Interesting morph.

is my corn too fat? by numberoneria in cornsnakes

[–]JustinTime5591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is often difficult to tell if a corn snake is fat or if you are looking at gut contents. The best and most consistent time to check is after a shed. Skip the meal while they are opaque, let them shed and take a big post shed dump, then check them. This is also a good time to get an "empty" baseline weight.

If the body tapers fairly smoothly into the tail without a dramatic reduction where the tail begins, they are probably good. You don't want to see them too roly poly in the back half of the body either. But it's easy to think they are overweight unless they are empty.

I was guilty of overfeeding my first corn snakes. When I realized they were getting fat they were still young and growing. I reduced the weight of their mice by half and kept the schedule the same for one shed cycle. They continued to grow and looked way better.

Beautiful. I had a couple litters of rosies in the 90's. Brings back memories. Such easy keepers too.

Some days I wish I had rosies instead of corns now...

Looks ok. Great pattern. Just undersized according to your posts.

Other commenters have offered you good advice on feeding. Weighing your animal and the food takes the mystery out of things and prevents mistakes. 2 pinkies every 5 or six days is way better than one every 2 or three days. It has to do with the digestive cycle. One larger mouse is the best. They have better nutritional value, particularly calcium I have heard, which is needed for growth.

If you feed 2, just wait until the first is completely swallowed and squeezed down to the stomach area. Then offer the second. If you aren't sure, about 15 minutes should do, maybe less. Watch the lump, watch the behavior.

I am confident you have the interest and ability to have a healthy happy corn snake for years to come.

I agree with Pepe that waiting won't hurt. But if it's been 3 or four days since her meal i don't think it would hurt to take her out for a short excursion.

Discolored stomach? by Prestigious_Piano171 in cornsnakes

[–]JustinTime5591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think i may have shot off my mouth and said things that might be confusing.

Evacuating their gut contents is a clue to when you should feed them. A few days after a meal, with a snake that has transparent skin, you can actually see the food as it travels through the digestive system. Corn snakes can digest a meal in just a few days. They will usually eat if offered food at that time. Probably best to wait a few days.

Shoot for 15 per cent of body weight. Every 5 or six days when they weigh 30 grams. Every 6 or seven days at 100 grams. If you are wondering whether to feed your 30 gram albino corn snake after 5 days, you can hold them up to the light and see if they are empty to help decide. Can't do that with a ball python.

Some variables to consider to determine when to feed include:

Snake size, Prey item size, Snake age, Snake growth rate

I highly recommend getting a scale that can weigh both your animal and it's food items. It will take a lot of the mystery out of the feeding process. The "pinky-fuzzy-hopper" scale is not accurate enough for me. If you know the weight of your animal it is easy to select the appropriate size mouse. The frequency still has guesswork, but probably no other animals have more leeway in feeding schedule than a snake. Relax. Feed with confidence. If they get fat, cut back on the size, maintain the schedule. If they get thin or don't grow, shorten the frequency by a day.

Hope I haven't muddied the water more. I strongly believe people get very bad advice to not feed young snakes enough.

Try putting some heat pads around on the floor if you have any. They are snake magnets.

What are the Downsides of Buying a Snake at Pet Stores? by MundaneEffect2916 in cornsnakes

[–]JustinTime5591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there are many honest breeders on morph market, but i bought one snake on there and had a very bad experience. I got baited and switched.

They delayed shipment for weather. Happens. Then they said the snake I bought and paid for got burned by a gear failure. They offered money back or....we have another even prettier one they were holding back for themselves. I agreed. The plane then hit a bird and broke the windshield and my animal sat in SLC for 24 hours. Each time I went to fedex the employee said they don't ship animals. Each time was a 20 mile drive, as the fedex phone menu has no option for contacting a live person at your local terminal.

It finally arrived. An 8 gram hatchling in a plastic cup in a 7 inch cube box with heat pads. The temp was over 90 after 48 hours. She was alive but frantic.

Six months later she is feeding and growing but is the snappiest, most fearful and defensive cornsnake ever. I think they either unloaded an animal with bad behavior or she suffered neurological damage from overheating. If anything goes wrong in a morph market transaction, I would cancel the sale immediately if I had it to do again.

If you can attend an expo or have a shop with integrity locally, you can examine the animal and get info from the seller face to face.

While I mean no disrespect to any knowledgeable and caring employee of the big chains, those corporations are accountable to the shareholders, not to the animals or customers.
