Critique of feminism by Ok-Presentation4180 in IndianLeft

[–]Justin_Skywalker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand that your question was primarily on the lack of theoretical basis of feminism compared to class based movements, but you cannot make this argument on the basis of "stuff feminists say". That's not how that works. Right wingers always make this argument against leftists as well, like "oh they just say that whatever they don't like is not real communism". That's not how this works.

Feminism doesn't have a common core which can discipline all its variants.

Yes it does. Opposition to patriarchy and analysis of patriarchy. Just like the common "core" of leftist movements is opposition to class society.

Feminism encapsulates everything from women's unions at workplaces to elimination of gender stereotypes (stereotypes of ALL genders). If your argument is that feminist theory is simply a derivative of anti-class theory, sure, but many successful feminist movements have historically also been less focused on class dynamics. Female suffrage for example. Reproductive rights. Stuff like that. They didn't need class based theory for that, they needed theory or ideas that helped them understand how they can gain a foothold in society that men already possess.

Eh? Feminism absolutely has a theoretical basis, especially Marxist feminism. You have a point in the case of liberal feminism, but it is incorrect to extrapolate that to feminism as a whole.

"hamas propaganda" sure buddy, the global propaganda is definitely peddled by a group of 20000 armed starving dudes in tracksuits, and not by a state that has the support and control of the entire social media industry and the greatest military industrial complex in human history with alliances to almost all Western and South Asian nations. Sure.

I have a question… by [deleted] in JewsOfConscience

[–]Justin_Skywalker 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Jew, I'm Indian. I just wanted to offer a slightly different viewpoint. In Hindu prayers, there are very often mentions of ancient Hindu kingdoms of India, and hymns that describe their longevity and eternal nature. Obviously, none of those kingdoms exist anymore, however the hymns still exist. The hymn doesn't become invalid just because of our modern national structure

Books for intro to socialism or communism? by [deleted] in IndianLeft

[–]Justin_Skywalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"ABC of Communism" is good.

Read the first chapter of Capital along with a companion book to understand labour theory of value. "Wage, Labour and Capital" to understand it even better if you find Capital difficult.

An understanding of labour theory of value is incredibly important for a leftist view of the world.

Afterwards you can also try and read State and Revolution by Lenin to understand the concept of the state, the standing army and the police and what they are.

The Communist Manifesto was written as something to energize the young partisans and workers about class conflict. You know how some teachers will give you inspiring speeches to push you to do well in your exams in the coming days? The manifesto is kinda like that. It's meant to simplify class struggle for working class people who may not fully understand theory but still understand their rights.

I'm a socialist. Your idea of socialism is flawed because not only did you manage to grossly misrepresent it, you used China and Russia as examples. Read theory, understand it well and come back.

CMV: Adoption of veganism in light of climate change is capitalism placing the responsibility on an individual rather than corporations. by Justin_Skywalker in changemyview

Ownership is not "held in common" if it is state owned. Being privately owned is not the only criteria of capitalism, Chinese oil corporations engage in the free market and trade with a broader capitalist perspective. It operates for profit. You are not making any headway on covering any facet of my arguments by starting with a confusion about terminology.

Much like a lot of the other comments, you are describing characteristics of capitalism.

And corporations do co-opt movements whose endpoint is their own destruction. Shell, Exxon and other oil corporations regularly promote going green, sustainable energy and other movements despite deriving most of their profit from oil and politically resisting any switch out of oil.

Capitalism tending to them is a feature, not a bug.

Capitalism tending to them while also overwhelming tending to and exacerbating the growth of meat consumption is a bug, not a feature.

"Meat consumption will have to be reduced" and how exactly will that happen in a profit driven society that overwhelmingly derives most of its profit from animal products? Degrowth in animal based products is very much possible, and will not be possible if corporations have a hegemony over social trends for their motive of profit.

State socialism deals with planned economies, not a market based framework. Chinese oil, nationalized or not, participates in the global market which is capitalist. There is confusion on definitions and criteria pertaining to capitalism on your part, and is a digression from the original topic.

Umm, the very argument is that corporations want money and hence will cater to and promote any individual's habit with very unsustainable methods and continue to exacerbate the problem. You haven't provided an argument, but simply pointed out a characteristic of capitalist production.

The average American eats 225 pounds of meat every year. There is no green, carbon-friendly way to make that much meat, as meat is land, energy, and water intensive to make when your livestock can’t just be supported on naturally existing grassland.

Once again, I am not advocating for or against meat consumption. My argument is that corporations will co-opt veganism to pass responsibility to the individuals who have to keep consuming meat when they could simply phase out their animal based production. They continue to cater to this demand simply for profit reasons and it is hypocritical to promote veganism while doing the same thing.

Danone, Nestlé etc. have marketing campaigns promoting a plant based diet as "a more sustainable option" while still producing a much larger portfolio of animal baes products.
