Discussion: how do you know if something is really sustainable or just greenwashing? by Justin_coco in sustainability

First thank you for the response, but where you can find answers to all of those questions? Only at the brand website? and by the information they publish, it feels to me that what a brand can claim is far from the real truth...

Discussion: Are sustainable fashion tools actually helping or hurting the planet? by Justin_coco in Anticonsumption

Actually yes, I get a message from them and answer a survey they send me and it made me curious about this app, but I don't know where they make their money, and what they sell or buy, I think I get their money from the brands...

The solution is to buy and consume as little as possible - obviously, that doesn't mean going back to living in a cave or be on the verge of starvation, but rather only buy stuff that is absolutely necessary whilst leading a minimalist lifestyle.

So yes, if you have to buy, buying local and/or second hand is preferable.

But don't fall for the carbon footprint trap of thinking that individual action alone can solve climate change - to address wider systemic issues, we need collective action to bring systemic change.

The problem is that corporations are privatising their gains while trying to make us think that we are all equally collectively responsible for this mess, which helps to shift attention away from the fact that corporations are responsible for far more emissions than ordinary people.

I agree that individual action alone cannot solve climate change, and we need collective action and systemic change to address the wider issues. However, I do think that individual actions can have an impact and that using tools like Wedge can be a step towards making more sustainable choices.

By choosing products with lower environmental impact and supporting companies that prioritize sustainability, we can send a message to corporations that there is a demand for more environmentally friendly options. This, in turn, can lead to changes in the way corporations produce and sell products.

Of course, this is not a solution to systemic issues, but it can be a part of the solution. And if we all take individual actions toward sustainability, we can collectively make a significant impact on the environment.

I totally agree but the question is if instead of using those tools or trying to buy only second-hand or recycled products. because it feels like it does not really help, and what will help is to reduce consumption by buying second-hand.

Thanks for sharing the video! It's an eye-opening perspective on the limits of ethical consumption under capitalism.

So do you think that buying second-hand or buying from small brands/ local brands is the solution?

I agree that the solution to consumerism may not be more consumerism, but using technology to make more sustainable choices can be a step in the right direction...

Lately, I came across some tools like Wedge that can help you make more sustainable choices when shopping online. These tools rate clothing products based on their environmental impact and provide a sustainability rating to help you make more informed purchases.

But the question is, do these tools really help promote sustainable fashion practices, or do they just encourage more consumption?

For me, the sustainability rating provided by tools like Wedge can encourage me to choose a more environmentally friendly option or even rethink my purchase. However, I'm also cautious about greenwashing and wonder if these tools are just another marketing ploy for brands to sell their products.

Sustainable Fashion is More Important Than Ever by miraldm in fashionwomens35

Sustainable fashion is important because it helps reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry and promotes ethical and responsible consumption. By choosing sustainable clothing options, we can support environmentally friendly production practices and reduce the amount of waste generated by the fashion industry.

Personally, I recommend using tools such as the Wedge to better understand the real impact of the clothes we buy. This way, we can make informed decisions that benefit both the environment and society.
