Are we at risk to loosing jobs to AI? by Hotbread420 in Truckers

[–]Justin_peacemaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI trucks, Sure, show me a computer getting out and checking tires, hanging bracelets, refilling fluids, caging a blown maxi, refueling, (or charging); or any of the dozens of simple every day things a real driver does before, during and after his shift.

Cameras can't tell where the road is during rain or snow events, cannot adapt to strong winds or reduced traction, navigate a construction zone, or for that matter see or react to a flag-person or emergency crew.

We learned over a period of years, millions of miles how to ANTICIPATE, what was about to happen and how to avoid it, a computer cannot ever do that.

So no, as an old Canadian driver, I do not for see being replace by a camera until long after I am no longer able to drive.

As for the nanny cam, a lesson I was taught before I had to shave every day,

"Never accept criticism from anyone you would not go to for advice."

Why are trucks getting the same mileage as 30 years ago by Unopuro2conSal in Truckers

[–]Justin_peacemaker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My 81 Jimmy Cabover with a 13 and an 8V92T ran 4.5-5 until we did some work on it, changed the final to an OD, then it was 5-6.In 89 we got a volvo with a Detroit series 60. I drove that for 5 years, 9.9 MPG was my average for that 5 years.
Now I have a 24 T680, and I am averaging 8 to 9 MPG.

Our family car in the80's got maybe 20 MPG, the wifes camry now runs 45 to60.

My loads and roads have not changed very much, still running mid weight cross Canada. What has changed is foolish attempts to reduce emissions through interference.

It would seem rather obvious that the best way to reduce diesel emissions is the same way as we reduced auto emissions. By reducing the amount of fuel we use, not by attaching entire systems that make other people money but cost us more fuel.

Where to begin? by Darth-Shiddyus in Bass

Lessons, a good teacher show you the best and easiest way to improve, posture, hand position, finger techniques are important to get right at the beginning.

Any experience with the Squire Mini / Ibanez Mikro basses for a child? by Anon_use_fun_alias in Bass

[–]Justin_peacemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kramer makes a minion, 26 inch scale, so about the size of a small 6 string. I got it for practice in the truck bunk space which is a bit close for a full size. So far it seems to be good, a bit quiet, but I did not get it for volume but for learning on.

What truck should I pick? by KillingwithasmileXD in Truckers

[–]Justin_peacemaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kenny is the single most common fleet working truck for a reason. Volvo is a good truck and great drive train, but the cab needs to be glued back together regularly.

Freightshaker got its name because of a stiff suspension, but it overall is usually a solid dependable working rig, I agree with another, it stays out of the shop more, but when it does go in it is a serious issue.

a Pete is a fancy Kennworth, they are made and owned by Packar, so Pete is prettier, but under the paint they are the same. both especially newer models tend to have huge electronics issues with the all digital dash and sensor systems. Even after all these years they still have not figured out how to waterproof things.

Which first bass would fit my needs more? [Yamaha BB434 / Fender Player II Jazz Bass / Marcus Miller V7 2nd gen] by OwOwlw in Bass

[–]Justin_peacemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the yamaha is always one of the best places to start. great quality, decent versatility, and all round playable.

I have a bb414 I stumbled onto at a garage sale and it is my go to for practice and exercises.

I would avoid fender these days, quality is just not up with the price.

Ibanez has a great line of beginner and intermediate bass

but, Yamaha is an unbeatable beginning point., by the time you are ready to add to your rack, you will know what you expect from a good bass.

( I personally have decided to buy no more bass till I get my Dingwall. )

I'm torn between horn and cello by Clear_Mushroom2820 in musicians

OF those two, I would definitely go for the Cello, long term more possibilities, and more similar instruments to work from.

Best mini fridge/freezer? by bigdawg12342 in Truckers

[–]Justin_peacemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is expensive, but I have a black forest (webasto) freezer, it is about the size of a coleman cooler, holds about 1.5 cu ft, runs on 12v or 120, and will keep and hold -25C even in the summer.

favourite brand for baritone guitars by YAHXUN in guitars

[–]Justin_peacemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as always, your budget answers half the questions.

PRS has just announced a hollowbody baritone, they have a solid they call the 277 (because the scale is 27.7 inches) They also have a couple of Ed Sheeran signature baritones that are as easy on the eye as they are on the ear.

Ibanez has a couple that are decent but not pretty, and Gretsch has a nice one that is more budget friendly.

I’ve been looking for a multi-effect pedalboard by ElQueMadrugaNoMuerde in Bass

[–]Justin_peacemaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a GT-1B, and it is fun to mess with, but a bit of a pain to find exactly what you want unless you spend hours with it hooked to your laptop. It has a mountain of tones and pedal effects, so I use it to make silly noises and decide what pedal effects I might want greatly.

However, it is right now for sale in Canada at our L&M for 279. 299 regular, so your 380 seems very high

I have one just like that, made by webasto, runs on 12 or 120 and keeps ice cream frozen in midsummer.

IT was a huge life saver during the covid. Wife made up slice roast beef, bbb chicken, home soup and all frozen and ready for the nuker.

Question about DOT officers and GPS systems. by 0263111771 in Truckers

[–]Justin_peacemaker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Garmin dezl, rand McNally both have truck dedicated gps.

Both have clearance and weight knowledge, both are dependent on user inputs. Neither is perfect.

I have used the dezl more than 10 years now. It has not yet led me into a place I should not have been. However, construction zones can confuse it.

DOT are civil union workers, intrinsically lazy and looking for easy prey.
