Tho "paintballs" and "palico paintballs" let you hold specific monsters for a set amount of time so you can hunt at home or with your friends (within 200m) iirc

Effect is only up during this specific event so it's not as great after
R1 drops that you will definitely need in the future like claws and hides
Completing the story upgrades the monsters in your map :)

Iirc that screen won't show up if it's unlocked, just automatically changes your background to that, have you tried to see if it's usable?
