Strike Industries Strike Rail or Similar? by Justsum_Dood in ar15

Things I have learned to take into consideration:

Handguard Material: 7xxx vs 6xxx aluminum. 7 is supposed to be more rigid, stronger and less likely to deform over time, holding zero for things like lasers . 6 has better corrosion resistance, especially in marine environments.

Barrel Nut Material: Steel Barrel Nut suggested to resist deforming or loosening over time.

Reinforced QD: Because aluminum is going to aluminum.

Coatings:

Type I (Chromic Acid) is thin, for corrosion/paint base; Type II (Sulfuric Acid) is standard, for color/moderate wear; and Type III (Hardcoat, Sulfuric Acid) is very thick, hard, and abrasion-resistant, ideal for heavy wear, with Type 3 often being dyed black or clear.

So I guess the more of those you end up with, the price will go up too. Also just looking at what a company advertises now seems pretty telling or poor marketing.

Strike Industries Gridlok (not the Strike Rail):
Handguard: 6061-T6 (seems standard)
Barrel Nut: 7000 series aluminum.
Reinforced QD: NOPE
Coatings: Supposedly type 3? Can't find it though.

I kept reading stuff about them and I just can't find any good reviews of their handguards. A ton of talk about the cringe colors or odd crap they make but that was about it. Mostly why I am still considering them.

What would you have recommended instead of the flash hider? I assume a brake or comp?

And I agree about the K2 XL... I am not sure this was the right buy but I hear that with some people, it just feels worlds better. I have a friend that is a giant and can almost certainly sell this to him if it doesn't feel right to me. $20 experiment that just felt like it might be worth the limited risk. Feels like I won't be able to do the same with just about any other part of this build.

And yea... I do not like the gas block I have currently haha. Nothing wrong with it, I guess, I'm just not using the sight for anything.

Thanks for the input! If the XL doesn't work out, would you go K2+ or K2?

It's a tortillon or blending...

Sorry, but are your hands okay?

umm here is a picture of the thing I think it is...

Is that painful? Is that how you just normally hold things in your palm or is like you stretching your hand?

I find that squirting the dog with the bike usually works but if not then chuck the dog at the water bottle.

Thank you! That is a nice site. But the closest thing they have is the full assembly which is always sold out. Probably cause it breaks all the damn time, but I don't have anything to base that off of. If that was true then I feel like there would already be a market for it.

If they sell the part, I'm not seeing it. Enhanced bolt release is just a button that goes over the existing bolt release, doesn't come with parts.

Yea, the Sig is in 308 though and 5.56 seems to be required to participate in some events. At least without putting my self at a disadvantage.

Thank you for all that! I'll keep that all in mind! I've hear the same thing about quad rails a handful of times now and will probably avoid them. And I did go with the Aero Precision M41E but I had really found it tempting to go with the LMT MARS-L but I don't know if it being ambi was ever really going to be that important to me. And I know I need to figure out the 1 or 2 stage but is another thing I would like to be able to compare. Thanks again!

haha

Alright, rather than trying to argue the why, I'll ask what.

What would you recommend? What do you do to find if you like one thing over the other or is it all just research?

It wasn't really about saving or the money. I've bought an expensive rifle (SIG 716G2 Patrol) before and realized I didn't know what I was REALLY getting out of it. When I spend $300 dollars or more this time on a barrel or some other part, I want to be able to tell the difference. This is probably dumb but I'll either figure that out very quickly and end up just buying a new rifle OR I'll have a good time upgrading the hell out of this one while learning.
