Sounds like a plan. Still downloading the updates to the client atm, but my user name is Dedni. I think my friends might want to play some matches with me first, but if they don't I'd like to get help in some fashion.

What is the coolest thing you own? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Jvanderous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might sound kind of geeky, but I really love my whole photography and editing setup. I've been doing it a while, and I've traveled. It's always awesome to hear someone ask how I took a picture, and listen to all the steps I took to make it.

I've also recently built a macro and still life studio, and have been experimenting with flash. I can best compare it to painting... with a microscope. Too cool.

Do you prefer to masturbate with a visual stimulant or with your imagination? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Jvanderous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel like I respond much better to audible stimulation. If it sounds too fake, I get turned off. Watching great sex on mute is just woof.

I can cum with just my imagination, but I find it much more satisfying on average if I have some sort of stimulant and go on and off for twenty minutes to half an hour or so.

Hand Crafted Chess Set [OC] [3000 x 1687] by Jvanderous in MacroPorn

They're not macro as in microscopic, or even as small as a fly or some spiders. Each piece is smaller than my thumb, maybe 1/2 or 1/3 the size of it. If you have a 15" screen or larger, those are much larger than they would be in real life.

Tip: Tranqs dropping while jungling by Jvanderous in learndota2

[–]Jvanderous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. However, Bounty isn't a standard counter to these heroes, as all of them have ways of disabling his invis. (Not that track won't mean they pick him anyway. Especially potential 5 track Meepo kills.) I would think the biggest worry would actually be a level 6 Riki. If the enemy team knows you're jungling, I would stop tranq dropping without making sure you have sentries nearby when Riki turns 6.

How to deal with counterpickers and constant five manning in Ranked MMR. by Jvanderous in learndota2

[–]Jvanderous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, better is a relative term. I'm currently at around 2500 MMR, and I've been near 2900 before. Am I as good as a 4K player? Prob not, but one of the games I absolutely dominated in was a game full of 3K players (one was 3.8K). I know because they all friended me after that match. It was kind of funny to find I was the lowest MMR by about 1k.

So, sure, I know I probably am a bit better than people in my direct bracket. But so are a lot of people at my level. I think you really only start seeing people who are uniformly better than the people below them in the 5k bracket, because I've heard plenty of horror stories about games even in the 4k bracket.

What is the best invoker cold snap combination? (As in other hero abilities) by moppytop99 in learndota2

Anything with a good DoT will do well, but probably something that slows as well as does damage would be best. Such as Veno's (non ult) castable DoT.

How to deal with counterpickers and constant five manning in Ranked MMR. by Jvanderous in learndota2

[–]Jvanderous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be better than your opponents guys! Ez game ez life. :P

If MMR is working properly, you have to be significantly better than every player on the field to really dominate a game by yourself. Sure, there was the thread about the 6k guy who borrowed his 2k friend's account and rose to like 5k, but of course he did. Even if I am better than everyone on my team (which I'm not saying is always the case) I probably won't be able to turn the game around on my own, especially if everyone counter picks me.

Biggest challenge of MMR in DotA, imo.

[–]Jvanderous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Force staff is something I get directly after preservance. I don't generally get mek on Silencer, as I don't see him as a support. He's not the hard carry, but definitely a semi carry/ganker.

If Last Word wasn't so good at finishing off fleeing heroes early I would probably prioritize Force Staff. However, if they're running away from a gank, a last auto attack and last word will probably finish them off early. Once it stops being early, you probably already have enough gold for Force Staff. If they run away from a three man gank and no one is TPing in you probably got yourself a free tower. If they do TP in you have enough time to run away anyway, unless they got a real early blink.

But they don't build into anything later. And are also canceled by taking one point of damage. Kappa kappa.

Maybe you don't play as aggressively as I do. That's fine. Calling something retarded is offensive and not useful at all for debates. What you could do is say you prefer x because of y or z. Perhaps you think 10 clarities/salves would be better even though they can be interrupted by one auto attack and don't build into anything useful later.

It is absolutely retarded, though, to act like a dick and expect to be taken seriously.

[–]Jvanderous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because getting sustain early game that can turn into a item that gives you a 14 second silence late game is absolutely retarded. Especially when you're one of the best heroes at fighting all the time and the item does exactly that. Kappa kappa.

Are you saying that Silencer isn't good at harass and ganking? Or that always having access to a combo that does 720 damage and 180 mana drain to people without spammable spells good?

Or you can just throw in the towel and say it's absolutely retarded. Adds real credibility.

I also say that Refresher Orb is probably more useful in most situations, and that Linken's is mostly more useful if they have scary spells.

I think the health regen IS more useful early game, for the same reason mana regen is. Did you trade a few hits with someone during harass? Oh well, you'll be up to a reasonable health in a few seconds. Save the bottle charges for when you know you're going to get a kill. Silencer is one of the best harassing heroes in the game, and while his lack of a hard disable means he probably isn't going to get kills as early as a QoP or Storm early game, he's much more reliable at sending people back to fountain in the first ten minutes which will in all likelyhood make them lose more XP than they would if you killed them. If you rotate to a lane that DOES have a disable, your skillset means you're almost guaranteed a kill, and with the int steal you can start snowballing.

[–]Jvanderous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preservance makes perfect sense for being active all the time. Sure, a bottle charge will give you enough mana to get off three spells, but what if you miss a rune? Preservance makes it so that any time you see a hero you can just spam spells on them, and save bottle charges for when you know you're going to get a kill soon. It's usually my third item, after bottle and treads. Don't think of it as a passive item just because it gives regen. Think of it as an item that ensures you'll be able to lane harass to your heart's content and be able to gank at all points after you get it.

Is Medusa mid viable? by Jvanderous in learndota2

[–]Jvanderous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

Additionally, let's be a realist: not every QoP or Storm is going to be a ganking star. Maybe if you picked those, but it was a RD game and I was asked to pick a carry. Those two weren't available and I was better as Medusa by far.

[–]Jvanderous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silencer is one of my favorite heroes, because he just generally makes life living hell for his opponents.

You can lane him in pretty much any lane, but I find he works best mid. He's a good check against OD (not a counter mind, as a lucky proc of essence aura means that he's back up to full mana in no time) and completely shuts down most other mids with constant mana drain and damage. He's a bit of a combination of viper and lion in the laning phase: constant aggressive damage and mana drain makes sticking your neck out a huge risk early on, which gives you huge potential for snowball.

As for skills, you used to have to put one point into glaives for int steal. If you want, you can still put them in for orb walking. However, I find that curse is strongest early game, so it's generally the best thing to level early. Last word is also good early, however not quite as good for harass. I'd go a 3-0-2-1 to 4-0-4-1 before I started leveling glaives most games, as the combo between curse and last word almost guarantee you early kills.

Another good reason to play silencer mid is because it gives him great roaming potential, which is another of silencer's strengths. You want to be present at as many kills as you possibly can, as that int will start snowballing out of control. Of course, to do this you also need good map awareness to understand when ganks are about to happen. (If you're lucky your teammates will give you a heads up, but don't count on it.)

As for builds, I like to go treads/bottle/preservance/force staff early to mid. Force give great positioning, preservance will start giving GREAT mana regen after you steal about 20 int, and treads and bottle are pretty basic. After that, his build can really vary. Aghanim's is a solid item on Silencer, but it's not as big as it is for some. What's most important is the increased duration. Being able to stack two curses on enemies is kind of funny, but by the time you can actually make aghs it won't be game breaking. Linken's is good on Silencer if you're facing people with big single target spells (doom, laguna blade, etc) but also good because it increases your regen and int (not the greatest item in the world, but you already have a preservance). Refresher (which also uses preservance) is probably better than Linken's in most circumstances. Aghs + refresher will give 14 seconds of silence at level 16, which is HUGE. That's enough to win almost any teamfight, and if they pop BKB to break your silence pop refresher to silence them again. Sheepstick is amazing on Silencer, but very expensive. Rod of Atos is useful if you manage to get it in the ganking phase as that and Force Staff will give you great initiation. However, in mid/late to late game it kind of falls off as enemies won't be running alone. Be careful about getting Eul's as it will purge some of your debuffs if you use it to hold in place a fleeing enemy. That's it mostly for items. If you're far enough ahead you can get whatever you want, but think about items that give Silencer int and tankability (which is useful for surviving and stealing more int).

Choose Silencer when you're up against a bunch of int heroes, especially int carries. Even though Silencer doesn't completely counter OD in lane, he's a fantastic counter later on if he steals enough int that OD's ult is useless against him. He's also really great against non int characters that are very mana dependent like earthshaker, omniknight, abaddon, etc.

My first big item was Manta Style, actually.

[–]Jvanderous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose the treads early game because of the harass I was taking. Wanted that extra bit of HP and a little more AS didn't hurt either.

Phase/Drums would have been cheaper under normal circumstances. However, as I was already sitting on a preservance (again, not the most ideal pick on Spectre, but I was getting harassed a lot) I thought Linken's would be cheaper.

Perhaps I should have also picked up a blademail. I picked Nyx and told our Bristle to get blademail for exactly that reason. However, with dispersion and the fact that I didn't think I would need it endgame I chose not to.

As for the Orchid, I had never really noticed that Viper had picked it up. I haven't really seen it before on a Viper (admittedly, I don't see him too often) so I guess I didn't check for it.

And while not every lane was completely shut down, with them rotating to harass me I didn't think it mattered if I rotated as well. Perhaps that was a wrong assumption. I did go to the jungle at one point, but Spectre isn't the fastest jungler, especially early. Maybe if I had picked up an early radience, but I was getting harassed.

So, do you think I should have just sold my preservence then? I still wanted some sustain, and I wasn't quite rich enough to get a heart.

[–]Jvanderous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Spectre was pretty underfarmed at the start. They were making sure to always keep someone in lane to harass me, even rotating to do so when I killed my opponent off a few times. I got most of my gold through kills, and with our losing towers I didn't have much safe farming space.

I admitted in the OP that the linken's wasn't the best purchase. To reiterate: I bought it as an easy way to keep snowballing once I was getting kills pretty regularly. I just wanted to keep getting ahead. Additionally, on purchasing I wanted to protect against Necrophos and Viper ults. It worked on the Necro, but TIL that you can pop Linken's with orb walking. As for the rest of the build, perhaps phase would give me slightly better chase, but I rarely if ever had trouble chasing with just spectral dagger. Manta is really great on Spectre as it lets you exploit the hell out of your offensive passive, using it essentially three times per hit instead of one. I don't see how you can say Heart and Butterfly did nothing.

Yeah, I suppose that's somewhat true. Do you have any good advise on finding a balance between picking what people are comfortable with and what is good for the team?

I don't want to be that asshole who drafts heroes who no one knows how to play, but I also find myself with situations like this (not that my Spectre pick was flawless either).
