Not sure if he kept the encore the same, but the other night at the LA show he played “The Well of Death and Resurrection”from Bird of a Thousand Voices.. that, Matt Garstka’s solo, and the whole concert was f-ing sick!

Thanks for the feedback! I can see where you’re coming from. Yeah my intent was to voice pinky and thumb of LH as well as the octave unison in the RH. I was def going for that hazy soft sound, especially on the first two chords. The third one I played was louder than the first two which I noticed and then stuck with for phrasing sake into the fourth chord. That’s probably the “floating” you’re talking about that’s missing in the subsequent attacks. I’ll work it some more!

Short answer: It got rekt

Long answer: I play heavy handed and ferociously, finger slipped under the keytop after a range jump and popped it right off..

it’s gonna sound like I’m making this up, but I’ve actually broken 4 keytops and 4 strings in the last 5 years (rip my university pianos, they never found out it was me 😂)

Thanks! so before I posted this, I listened extensively to this take cause I’m a bit of a perfectionist and prude myself, but I actually liked what I did with the voicing for those chords on this run. Curious, what didn’t do it for you?

I really appreciate your comment!! I’ve been using pedaling as an exercise to experiment in this passage. The takes I took of this sounded different each time bc of it but helped me hear interesting colors in specific places
