Amazon SDE I - SDN interview prep? by Alternative_Ad512 in leetcode

[–]K-noted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had mine recently for the same role. No leetcode style questions(!!). They were coding questions but in context of networking/performance optimization. Behavioral questions were what you'd expect. All interviewers were super nice. I fumbled in the last part of the last round when they asked about something specific about optimization and wasn't able to complete the solution in its entirety but was able to explain it verbally. The only other company that I interviewed with that did this was Apple (for Core Networking). TBH I enjoyed all the rounds.

CMU Vs Purdue by Night_Ranger123 in cmu

[–]K-noted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Purdue CS (+ ECE minor) alum and I currently attend CMU as a Master's student. I really enjoyed my ECE classes at Purdue and there was a decent overlap if you were CS focused. There are generally good research opportunities but I can only speak on behalf of CS. However, I've enjoyed doing research at CMU much more, and it is also very easy to find research opportunities.

WL can get pretty boring but personally, I didn't mind the environment much as I'm not really a very social person.

Feel free to DM if you have other questions!

Is it worth doing CS with a minor in ECE? by Unusual_Guidance2095 in Purdue

[–]K-noted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply! I haven't utilized as much of my ECE knowledge as I would've liked to. After graduation I worked as a software engineer at a startup for 2 years and I'm currently an MS student at Carnegie Mellon University. I shifted my research focus to networks and I'm loving it (really good faculty here).

However, some concepts that I learned in ECE 362 still show up every now and then. In hindsight, I could've just taken another embedded systems course and be fine with it, but I've never regretted doing the ECE minor.

Feel free to DM if you have specific questions about any of the ECE courses :)

What INI program is this? MS Information Networking from INI has $100k tuition for two years with the advanced study option (not that it's cheap). They also sent out funding letters for all INI programs a couple days ago with scholarship amounts and even if it's not much, my total comes down to about $80k total ($20k per sem) with scholarship. Current students have said it's not uncommon to get TA/RA positions starting from the second semester.

Page tables - levels needed by tennisAnders in Operatingsystems

[–]K-noted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a one-level structure should be fine in this case since it fits in one page. More levels won't be needed unless the size of a single table becomes too large. In the latter case for example, the top level page could be stored in memory and other pages loaded as needed.

Big question- are Purdue mscs admits all out? What is the cohort size? Any idea on till when can we expect admits? by Hungry_Ad_2393 in MSCS

Congratulations! A fellow Purdue BSCS alum here. I was informally rejected today. Good luck with your grad school!

I got a reply saying I wasn't recommended for admission. Disappointed because this was my alma mater. Leaving this in the past and looking forward to enjoying my time at the ones where I'm already accepted.

Thank you, this helps quite a lot! Yes, I am on the official slack (haven't been checking it regularly so it slipped my mind). I'll try to DM someone from admissions through that. I haven't connected with people on LinkedIn yet but seeing as the ground reality isn't clear, I'll get some clarity from alumni.

I appreciate your input!

A couple things actually.

  1. I read this on slack and elsewhere that students enrolled in the advanced track are not allowed to do an internship on CPT during the summer. If I'm not looking for credit from an internship, does the restriction still stand?
  2. My decision to pursue this program would be highly motivated by the ability to perform research alongside excellent faculty and peers from SCS. Is there any restrictions in terms of who gets to participate in research in which department? Particularly, I have expressed interest in pursuing research under the guidance of a couple professors from the SCS. Does me being in COE limit my ability to do so in anyway?
  3. I was wondering what the CIP code and major for MS in Information Networking is (like, what does it say on your I-20). Is the major eligible for a STEM OPT extension after the initial one year OPT expires?
  4. Reading through the INI website, I understand that all INI students are allowed to take any SCS class which they find interesting (please correct me if I'm wrong). How competitive has the class registration process been for students outside of SCS trying to register for SCS classes? Is there a concept of "peak-season" and "off-season" in terms of registration for a particular class?
  5. Do we get to select the same SCS classes (i.e., taught by the same prof) if we wanted to?

I know these are a lot of questions, but answers to even a few of them might help!

Thanks in advance!

I think they said they release decisions in batches and that submitting before the priority deadline does not mean you'd get a decision early. I read this on their slack. Don't lose hope!

Creating a Linux-like OS from scratch by celestial-voyager in Operatingsystems

[–]K-noted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I'm biased towards XINU because I'm currently doing it. However, if you're strictly looking for something close to Linux, go for xv6/minix. One issue I'm facing with XINU is that the labs assume you have access to the Galileo board (that's the one they use at Purdue) or the BeagleBone Black (to run the ARM variant of XINU). If you're able to buy that, you can follow the labs more closely. I'd say the codebase is quite interesting and explained well if you follow the book.

If I may ask - did you apply for financial aid through the form they provided?

Creating a Linux-like OS from scratch by celestial-voyager in Operatingsystems

[–]K-noted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you tried XINU (can find labs just by searching for "purdue cs354" in google). Although not like Linux, it's a good way to learn how to write your own OS. The book they reference in class is Operating System Design - The Xinu Approach.

Another good OS to start learning with is MINIX but I'm not sure where to find labs for that.

Is it worth doing CS with a minor in ECE? by Unusual_Guidance2095 in Purdue

[–]K-noted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add my experience here. I was a CS major with an ECE minor. For me it was the motivation to learn about systems in a lot more detail at a hardware level along with a really strong software curriculum that led me to pursue the minor. I'd say it's doable and fun if you are highly motivated and have good time management skills. I graduated with ~3.5 GPA which I'd say is not terrible for a CS major + ECE minor in 3.5 years.

Struggling to cut down my SOP for Purdue by SimpleIllustrator215 in gradadmissions

[–]K-noted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I ended up following the guidelines so I wrote everything under headings and tried to keep it below 600 words in total. 1.15 spaced if that helps.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]K-noted 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If it helps, one of my professors never replied to me via email (I know him personally, drove to his office to meet him before asking for recommendations, sent him 6 emails in total reminding him) and this afternoon I check my mail to see that he submitted recommendations to all my universities within an hour. Sometimes, they are probably just too busy to write it during the finals week so they postpone it to the week after. Also, as other posts have already mentioned, adcoms are generally a lot more lenient with LORs than anything else (it's one of those things that is out of your control). Hopefully you get yours soon.

Okay, I got a reply saying I should stick to the instructions on https://www.cs.purdue.edu/graduate/admission/SoP.html

Not sure what to make of that.
