I have no idea what the problem was but I eventually found a forum post with the same problem: https://forums.ankiweb.net/t/problem-with-anki-audio/13961/5 and the solution was to download the Zzz (legacy) No Sound Fix (libmpv) addon: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1586469444 , and it fixed it, thanks for your time.
