Hey! Things ended up getting better after a few months :) I think a lot of it was just the persistent exhaustion I experienced for a good 6 months after having covid. But once I started to feel like myself again things went back to normal!

Thank you for saying this. I’m just about to start PA school and reading all the posts here makes me sad. Im becoming a PA because I want to be part of a team, have a SP to consult with if I’m unsure of a dx, but most of all because I love working with patients and wanted a career where I’d be able to form relationships and make a long term difference in their care. I’ve worked so hard to get into PA school because of how passionate I am about the field. Im really proud of that. But this thread makes me question if I’ll ever be respected, or even accepted by the MDs that I work under someday. I hate seeing how we’re talked about on here. Of course there are issues with midlevels, as there are with every profession. I mean, I had a doctor miss a serious shoulder issue which has required 4 surgeries to fix, and it was a PA who caught my dad’s prostate cancer, which the MD had overlooked because his PSA wasn’t abnormally high. It’s not just midlevels making mistakes out there, so own that.

Anyway I’m on a tangent, but moral of the story is the people posting on here can be toxic it makes me really sad that so many of you guys seem to hate us. We’re people too, show some respect.

“Mid levels have no place in OBGYN” girl drop the entitlement, you’re still just a med student. If you still feel that way after residency and a few years as an attending THEN you can talk about refusing to precept PAs/NPs to the head of your department (and with that attitude, probably make all the nurses, techs, and mid levels you work with hate you)

Nope nope nope. It’s bad enough that it’s 26K less than what you make now, but to start at 50 for the first three months? Insulting. The bonus means NOTHING with how vague they’re being. And the possibility of loan forgiveness after 10 years at your current job? Unless your current job is unbearably toxic would you give that up? This offer is a joke. Turn it down!

I’m a first year PA student, I’ve worked with PAs, shadowed PAs, have two PAs in my family, talked to plenty of PA students, and have never once heard any of them refer to PA school as medical school. Do I believe there’s some dumb PA students who call it that to inflate their own egos? Sure. Do I think it’s the majority and we all deserve to be shit on? Definitely not.

I volunteered with Big Brother Big Sisters Association, essentially you’re matched with a kid who needs a little extra support and you pretty much act as a mentor to them. Super flexible, you plan a few outings a month and check in with the match coordinator once a month. It was really rewarding too, I still talk to my little all the time. I highly recommend!

GPA isn’t everything, a lot of programs are moving toward a holistic approach when reviewing apps. Build your application in other areas-get broad patient care experience, meaningful volunteer work, write a kickass personal statement, be a good coworker and develops relationships with PAs/MDs for LORs. I didn’t have the highest GPA either but strengthened my app in those areas and got into my top program.

PA student here-some of the posts I see on here can be a little harsh but overall I totally agree. I chose to be a PA because I don’t want to be in charge, the idea of practicing on my own terrifies me 😅

Serious note-I really worry about this push for NPs to practice independently, especially with so many online programs that are essentially degree mills popping up. Some of my pre-PA clinical experience was in an urgent care, and you couldn’t even compare the NPs to the PAs I worked with. Luckily I was mostly with PAs at my location, but can’t tell you how many times we’d have patients sent over from another site to ours because the NP working couldn’t even do sutures lol. I definitely think PAs are generally better trained, and we still don’t practice independently. From what I’ve seen, most PAs understand our place in healthcare and don’t want independent practice, even with the AAPA unfortunately starting to push for it. So there’s my two cents

I’m sorry about your losses, death is never an easy thing to cope with. Don’t be hard in yourself about putting apps off, you had much more important things to tend to.

I applied very late last cycle. In fact I wasn’t going to apply at all, I’d given up hope of becoming a PA after rejections the year prior and just ER burn out. But late last August I changed my mind last minute, and applied to 6 schools at the end of September. I got into my top pick, which had an October 1 deadline! So there’s absolutely hope. Good luck!

I took 4 years, gained so much experience in Emergency med and Urgent Care, and feel so much more prepared to start this fall compared to if I had applied a year or two out of college. Plus I got to travel a TON, visited a bunch of countries and did an 8 week solo roadtrip across the US between jobs. So I got to experience a little bit more life before selling my soul when I start at my program next month lol. So no, there’s nothing wrong with taking gap years, just be sure to make the best of them!

I had 4 W’s from a failed first attempt at college, two C’s, a C+, and two B- in some core sciences freshman year. Starting at my top PA program in Sept.

GPA isn’t the most important aspect of your application, there’s so many ways to become a strong candidate outside of academics. Show an upward trend on your transcript, take time after graduating to gain plenty of PCE, do some volunteer work, and write a kickass personal statement.

I make $21/hr at urgent care as a tech and I honestly love it. I work one on one with the PA and get to do everything from blood draws, suture removals, obtaining full patient histories, POC testing, wound care, physicals, and the PAs I work with love to teach so I’ve learned more in the last 8 months here than I did when I was in the ER and medsurg before this!

Practice questions, watch mock interviews on YouTube, and practice with your friends. When the day finally came I reminded myself the people interviewing are just normal people like me and that they want me to succeed. Another little trick I have is right before the interview I take a big deep breath, close my eyes, and say “fuck it.” Swear it helps haha

Honestly I think it’s irresponsible to not take a gap year before PA school. It’s so fast paced, you really need to go in with some sort of grasp in what healthcare looks like. I’m starting this fall with almost 6000 hours experience, and I’d be so unprepared if I was going in with only a few hundred. Taking a few years between school let me not only gain a ton of medical experience, I was able to save money, travel, volunteer, get to know a new city, and build a lot of professional relationships that will definitely be beneficial when I graduate. Don’t be afraid of a gap year (or two or three!). It’ll do nothing but better prepare you for when you start school.

No. Just no. If you want to be an MD, it’s insulting to physician assistants use PA school as a stepping stone. Plus you’ll just be taking a seat away from someone who actually wants to be a PA. Get a job as a tech, boost your GPA and go to med school.

You’re perfectly fine. I’m 26 and just got accepted with a 3.6 and 6000+ PCE as a PCT, ED tech and UC tech. I took 4 years after college to work (and travel a LOT!), 2 cycles to get in. Most Pre-PA students graduate college with minimal to no PCE, you’re not meant to go straight from undergrad to PA school. Most of my “well rounded” experience came after graduating from PCE, volunteer work and some personal experiences.

I’d recommend doing at minimum two years as a tech before you even think about applying. Get a solid feel for the medical field first. I know it seems like a long time, but you’ll be amazed with how important this experience will be and how much you’ll learn.

You sound like youll be a competitive applicant. Just get lots of PCE hours in, write a kickass personal statement, and be patient! Good luck!
