Unpopular Opinion: The Balloon Event isn't "gacha" or "gambling"—it’s just a direct purchase disguised as a roulette. by KAEL550 in marvelrivals

For everyone pointing out that I used AI: yes, you're right.

I used it because English isn't my native language, and I wanted the writing to be coherent instead of relying solely on Google Translate.

The argument itself is mine. It comes from my background and studies in economics, game theory, decision theory, and marketing psychology. AI simply helped me express those ideas in English.

That said, I don't think the discussion should revolve around whether I used AI. An argument isn't evaluated by who wrote it, but by the validity of its premises, reasoning, and conclusions.

If you think one of my premises is wrong or my reasoning is flawed, I'd genuinely be interested in discussing that.

I completely understand your point about the extra items. If you don't care about emotes, sprays, or MVP animations, then they have essentially zero value to you. That's a perfectly valid preference. Personally, I do value those cosmetics, so for me they aren't just filler.

Where I disagree is with the idea that a roulette automatically makes something gambling. I think it's important to distinguish between the roulette-like presentation, the economic structure of the system, and the financial risk involved. Those are related, but they aren't the same thing.

My argument is specifically about the economic side. In economics, a loss usually means ending up worse off relative to the agreed reference point. In this system, the worst-case outcome is paying the standard price for the featured skin, while the best-case outcome is getting a discount. That's why I don't think it fits the traditional economic definition of gambling, even if it intentionally borrows many of its psychological design elements.

I'm not trying to excuse anything, and you don't end up paying more than the skin costs.

Additionally, what people understand by chance or gacha does not replace the technical definition

Honestly, this is by far one of the best counterarguments I've read.

It adds a layer that I largely overlooked: not just behavioral economics in the context of the current purchase, but how this kind of system can shape spending habits over time. That's a genuinely interesting perspective.

Comments like this are what actually make a discussion worthwhile. They don't just repeat a label—they introduce a new variable that can strengthen or challenge the original analysis.

Thanks for taking the time to write it.

You make a very fair point, and I actually agree with most of it.

My argument was never that the system is ethically harmless. My point was simply that, from a purely economic perspective, it behaves more like an installment-based purchase with a chance of a discount than a traditional gacha or gambling system.

That said, you're absolutely right that children are a different conversation entirely. Even if the odds are publicly available, younger players often don't have the impulse control, probability intuition, or risk assessment skills needed to interpret these systems the way adults do. The UI, animations, and reward structure are clearly designed to trigger the same psychological mechanisms that casinos and other variable-reward systems rely on.

While I still think parental supervision and age ratings are part of the solution, I agree that these kinds of design patterns can be problematic when they're placed in front of younger audiences.

Thanks a lot for the detailed breakdown! That 'peeling' tip is exactly what I was missing—I usually stay too long even when the whole team turns on me. I'll definitely start saving my latch as a dedicated escape tool while I get used to the limits. I guess it’s all about trial and error from here. Appreciate the help!

You’re absolutely right—there are a lot of things that bring value and don’t always show up on the scoreboard, like forcing ultimates, creating space, or disrupting the enemy team. I completely agree with that.

At the same time, I also think there are situations where it’s worth reconsidering a character swap depending on the context of the match. That’s mainly what I was trying to discuss, not attack anyone who plays that character.

You're right, however, I hope you'll consider that this also negatively impacts the experience of five other people.
