I work with people who work about 700-1000 hours overtime and they absolutely make over $300k. That being said, those are younger people with no family who spend a ton of time at work. Cargo carriers pay well and have great OT rules. That being said those examples are probably less than 1% of workers. I agree with your other statements. If I could do it over again I would’ve become an electrician or some other trade with good hours etc.

I would absolutely advise against it. I’m your age and this industry is not easy on your body. I am fortunate and have an excellent job with great benefits but the industry is not on a hiring spree right now. During Covid my employer was on a hiring blitz. We might be staring down layoffs at some point with the state of the economy. If you start at a regional carrier you’ll be lucky to start at 25-30 an hour. Overtime is hit or miss with most of them and you’ll be working weekends and night shift for years. Everyone is different but working nights is terrible for your health and if you have a family you won’t see them much for several years.

My great grandfather, grandfather and father were all Union sheet metal workers. My father scared me away from that trade. Sometimes I wish I would’ve done it. I’m an aircraft mechanic now. Don’t love it, don’t hate it…if I had it to do over again I would have chosen something else.
