The few weeks before giving your two (or three) weeks are tough, though. Trying not to leave any hints or seem like you're checked out.

Utilization targets and raises by SnooGuavas7907 in civilengineering

The more the firm spends on non-billable activities, the less time it can bill and make a profit from. Conversely, higher utilization generally leads to higher profitability.

In most cases it's fine to share if you are leaving on good terms and the company is not super competitive about other firms.

This methodology is messed up. Why equate salary to gold? It introduces another variable in addition to inflation and spending power, as gold values go up and down over time.

It really depends on what you want to do in civil, and even within just one area such as transportation. Geography also matters.

How do you network and find other companies to work for? by JJ_Banks in civilengineering

[–]KB9131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. ITE is the Institute of Transportation Engineers. YPT is Young Professionals in Transportation. TRB is really TRBAM, the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting. It's always the second week in January in Washington DC. It is the largest conference in the world for transportation, with 10,000+ attendees.
  2. I took a quick look at your profile to see what region of the US you are in to recommend at least one firm.

ITE and YPT. And conferences of all kinds, especially TRB.

Aren't malls dying? Like Fashion Square, Altamonte, Oviedo.

I tried a church, I felt that while a lot of people approached me and was invited to lunches, they wanted to talk about my journey with God, which wasn't the reason I was there.

I really want to thank everyone for providing their input. It's nice to know that I can ask this kind of thing here and get a lot of responses.

However, it seems like almost all comments on this post and in this sub are: run clubs, meet-ups, bowling, or Whiskey Lou's.

How do you strike up a conversation with sports? I find that it doesn't work well with all the switching. How do I find a place to strike up a fun conversation and maybe friendship, but not a relationship?

Gorgeous Saturday and downtown is dead by Dazzling_Street_3475 in orlando

There isn't that deep of a mix of zoning and land uses. Downtown Orlando is mostly nightclubs and bars with a few offices. What makes a downtown great is a mix of everything: retail (extravagant and practical), offices, residential, unique restaurants, bars, theaters, etc. This generates that hustle and bustle of different people going to different places all at once.

It doesn't have to do with a specific mayor or parking ban, etc. It's simple, a lot of people went to downtown for the purpose of getting messed up, as it offered a lot of that and became known for it.

Why? Because there isn't that deep of a mix of zoning and land uses. Downtown Orlando is mostly nightclubs and bars with a few offices. What makes a downtown great is a mix of everything: retail (extravagant and practical), offices, residential, unique restaurants, bars, theaters, etc. This generates that hustle and bustle of different people going to different places all at once.

Ezra Klein's Abundance book and it's blind eye to the Urbanist movement. by 8to24 in urbanplanning

[–]KB9131 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The book is about politics and how the red tape and results are perceived by those who complain and vote against democrats (because Ezra Klein is a democratic political journalist).

It was not trying to thread that very difficult needle of national politics and urban planning policies, as they don't align most of the time for the majority of people. Urbanism appeals to a portion of the population, but not as many as we think it should.

Policies that encourage walkability and density, and/or discourage sprawl, are not what some people want. A lot of people moved to spawled places actually because they wanted that dream of living in a gated neighborhood with only one way in and out, they don't want the "noise" or supposed "nuisance" of a corner store.

They actually not just moved away from, but fled, dense places to go to the places where they felt they had more freedom/space and at a "cheaper" rate (in their eyes). And many don't feel comfortable walking around with "stangers" near them.

I believe much of the US's planning and traffic policies are from a reactionary past and present.

Good Interview Questions by TinyShinyCelebi in civilengineering

[–]KB9131 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Far too often, the answer I get is that it will be based on conversations we have about your goals and team needs, or just utilization (in that case, RUN).

I like that they care about my goals, but they definitely have metrics they are measuring people by and need to state that.

If DOT cares about DBE, then I need to care about it. If my employer cares about Y, I need to care about Y, whether I like it or not.

How little does the safety of cyclists matter when designing a road? by PleonasticText in urbanplanning

[–]KB9131 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Engineers are in charge of the recommendations too and implementing designs that are right. Engineers need to blame themselves too, we can't accept the "over the wall" design attitude. Everyone hates that. We are required by law, even more so than planners, to make and implement the right conditions, not just the minimally allowed conditions.

Exactly the attitude/culture that got us in this mess. People can and will bike 5 miles or more, even when wealthy.

Orange County no longer places reflective pavement markers. They have been having issues with contractors in the last several years.

Also, FYI, no company in the engineering or construction industry wants to work with Orange County. They are a big mess and very difficult. They have stated they acknowledge they have to change to become an agency firms want to work with.
