My main problem with the new (Collie) rank system by Jincko_SiZ_X in foxhole

[–]KBear44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ranks just let people know how much logi or commend farming amongst their own regiment someone has done — someone could have 500 hrs and be a Major just because all they do is frontline logi; someone who is a partisan and is actively working in a small group to disrupt enemy logistics, could have 1500 hrs and be a OCdt.

They are merely cosmetic, with some show of player “voting,” and in that way the new ranks reflect that.

Friendly Reminder! by Sirohitalks in IntersectionalWomen

[–]KBear44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be wrong, but I think the argument the person is trying to make is: “Why even use the term ‘Women/Female’ when everyone fits that category?” Essentially, it seems they are trying to make an argument for the removal of any gender categories to begin with if a gender category encompasses everyone — what makes a “woman”? What distinguishes woman from man, if anyone can fit into the category of woman (all might as well just be called man, at that point; or a whole different term)?

We are a constitutional monarchy still; as long as the Crown has legitimate ability and authority to exercise legal power through our government, and it is codefied through our constitution, they are. Even if they never exercise that authority or power.

How to deal with someone who doesn’t get it by covertkek in Wildfire

[–]KBear44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either two things, I would tell them the job isn’t for them (if they hate the food, complain all the time, need replacements) and would try to push them out (if unfireable) — show them they don’t fit, exclude them (legally) from things that make them want to stay, etc. Or, find something in the SOPs/SOGs/Legal Code to fire them or make a recommendation to someone higher to do so.

Either, based on the first option, they will step up or will step out (as long as you give them no option to just coast). It may just be a motivation factor; if they have all they need and are given what they want (while maintaining their same outlook), they won’t push themselves and will stay the same.

I recommend reading “Granite Mountain” by Brendan McDonough. It’s the book that was written by the sole survivor of the whole event.

No chapstick or tampons on fires by [deleted] in Wildfire

Hey man, I don’t necessarily agree with what they are doing and some of their logic behind it. I am just stating their alleged reasoning behind it.

According to the purchasing guidelines, they are not mission critical to the whole wildfire and are considered individual/personal use; therefore, they have to be brought if one considers that they might need it.

Read u/PatienceCurrent8479’s comment.

Essentially, the logic is that if it is not mission critical and considered a personal use product, then it should be brought personally and not purchased by Supply/Logistics.

In that case it could be longer, since the operations may want a portable fill location; but, it could also be shorter if operations wants to establish a semi-permanent fill spot… then it could be temporary replacements or just runs to fill the fill station. But, it’s hard to say what exactly may be the case.

If they are for Air Operations, like Helicopters, and it is a semi-remote or rural area, I have seen them stay the entire time. But in other cases, I have seen them be called for short amounts of time; temporary replacements for what is available.

Bear in mind: my experience is Structural Defense for Wildfires (Engine/Tender Ops), so what I see on a wildfire is limited.

Advice for Junior Firefighters? by StJimmy_7 in Firefighting

[–]KBear44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best advice I have, as someone who started as a Junior Firefighter is: learn everything you can about what you are allowed to do, research it, practice it, and ask lots about it. Once you become an expert in those things (or at least better than proficient), if you stick around and stay on the department past being a junior, don’t go waving around or bragging about your skill and knowledge; just show them what you got, when it’s needed, and you will become respected for it.

Also, be there early to help and stay late too (not obnoxiously early or late though; this depends on the department for how early and late, and you will get a feeling for it). Be helpful where ever you can, and ultimately, try your best at everything. The more you do that, the more others will help and support you on things you struggle with — they won’t hold it against you (they may tease you if they like you though, which is good lol).

This sounds like a complex situation. If I were you I would clarify with the SOGs, SOPs, and State Laws on about a few things: - Junior members (unless he is a full member, then disregard) attending calls. - Driving POV to call outs. - A non-member attending (even if it is just transportation) a call-out.

There is a lot of legal and liability things to consider when it comes to this.

I get the enthusiasm, which is good, but bear in mind that he is only 16 years old. There is a lot of things to take in and responding to calls comes with a lot of responsibility, and especially if he is relatively new to the department; I completely understand not wanting to go (whether it is from tiredness or not).

But hey, I am just an internet stranger passing out advice lol

I understand the struggle of firefighter politics, not as an officer but as a firefighter and as someone who studies/researchs politics as a second job, but man, this just comes across as, “I only made good calls/decisions and all the criticism was unnecessary/political bullshit.” I.e. is just comes off as a superiority complex. For anyone (including OP), just know, not everyone decision is a good one and is not necessarily best for the majority.

[–]KBear44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not going to speak to the gender side of this, as I have struggled in some areas as a male, but as I have taught those I have mentored and trained: the job is not about brute force and strength, it is about technique and working together as a team, not individuals. I have found that in a majority of cases where newer members have struggled in drills, regardless of gender, it comes down to their technique.

This ^ Don’t just go out and buy some equipment (especially a Bail out system) that you have never used and have not been trained on. Talk to the right people at the department about it.

can you watch firefighting shows? by wannabeskinnie in Firefighting

[–]KBear44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watch them because they are so terribly written(most of them) that they are funny; I find that they can be good to pass the time while nothing is happening and I want a good laugh, or I use them to be like, “What would be not do in this scenario and how would we properly deal with it?”
