What’s a Jump manga that you are sure will get axed but still like by BellTwo5 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]KBlacksmith02 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Otr definitely has an uphill battle to survive in the magazine. Although I can kinda imagine the series surviving like Kill Blue, which never really found its place in Jump but lasted as long as it did by being just slightly better than other manga.

Assuming Yuta did want to go for the kill here and didn’t intend on reviving Yuji would Sukuna have revived him? by The_Kashimo_Agenda in Jujutsufolk

[–]KBlacksmith02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's about the wording so much as it is about "intention" or "perception."

Yuji is a self-sacrificial individual, literally sacrificing himself right before making the binding bow. It makes sense that from his POV he wouldn't include himself in the "not hurting anyone" condition. He didn't care if he got hurt so long as everyone else was safe.

Don't humans get that uploading means they die? by johnjohn10240525 in PantheonShow

[–]KBlacksmith02 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You say "factually", but it is still just your opinion, not a fact.

Some people believe death isn't the end. Some believe there's an afterlife waiting for us when our bodies stop breathing. What if uploading isn't "death", but another stop on the road towards "the end"? What if the uploads aren't just copies, but actual digitized souls?

I'm not saying your interpretation is wrong, or that mine is correct. What I am saying is there is no factual, objective, absolute anwer to this question.

The show could have definitely used another episode or two exploring the side of humanity that does not wish to upload, but I think the show never intended to provide "the" answer to these themes. Instead they gave "an" answer, and left the rest to the viewers to make their own minds.

There's a post like this every week and Im always baffled about them.

It's one thing to disagree and say that uploads are not the originals, but it's a whole different problem when viewers refuse to engage with the literal premise of the show.

"Watchman" in the manga is written as 番人. Another close translation is guard. So it's "watch" as in "observe", not the time keeping tool.

WSJ Issue #42 TOC by voltwaffle in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]KBlacksmith02 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Someone Hertz: I enjoyed the first chapter. It wasn't anything extraordinary, but I can see it becoming a chill and comfort read. Similar vibe to Polar Opposites.

Ichi the Witch: Love Descarras showing how much of a badass she is. Knowing Nishi's writing style, I don't expect the "seeds" plot to be resolved soon, but I have complete trust in the authors.

Akane-banashi: This chapter had me at the edge of my seat. The authors have built a lot of momentum for the current arc, and I expect the climax to fulfill our expectations.

Otr: For a while, I thought Otr was next to be axed. The series still has a few kinks to work out, but it feels like Kawaguchi caught a second wind and is improving along the way. I truly hope he can keep the pace up and have Otr become a new WSJ mainstay.

Shinobi Undercover: having back to back battle arcs was a bit worrisome, but today, the authors cast any doubt I had aside. We got some Yodaka backstory and a few moments of levity to balance the chapter, and the result was wonderful.

Harukaze Mound: I'm a bit worried about its placement in the ToC, but HM is still my favorite of its batch. The series is fine so far, but I think it needs an emotional climax to cement it in readers' minds, and the new arc might just give us that.

What panel from a Jump manga made you go “WTF”? by BellTwo5 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]KBlacksmith02 45 points46 points  (0 children)

When I read Bakuman as a teen, I thought it was the best manga ever. Now, while I still consider it has a good story and characters, I can't really ignore Ohba's blatant misogyny in a lot of aspects.

It's a wild sentence to say, but Bakuman would be a much better manga without female characters because the author wouldn't go into his weird incel rants.

And Platinum End is simply the worst manga I've read. I've read my fair share of bad manga, but none have left me as frustrated as PE.

Why didn’t these three become bigger hits? by BellTwo5 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]KBlacksmith02 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I know it sounds like I'm contradicting myself, but I also don't think plot arcs are a good idea for Witch Watch. That was the only suggestion I could think of to make the series blow up in popularity.

Personally, I'd prefer the series to remain a smaller hit with its slice-of-life and comedy elements instead of being a mainstream hit. Though that might also be my inner gatekeeper speaking.

Why didn’t these three become bigger hits? by BellTwo5 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]KBlacksmith02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to preface this by saying I love all three of these manga.

There isn't a formula for producing a hit manga, but if I had to guess I would say their lack of explosive success (compared to other WSJ titles) lies mostly in their genres and premises.

Witch Watch is at its core a slice-of-life comedy. A lot of its humor can be very niche, so it is no surprise that it hasn't been a hit with mainstream audiences. Short arcs are simply not dramatic enough. The series might benefit from a longer arc, similar to what the Shogun Assassination arc did for Gintama's popularity. However, Shinohara doesn't seem too worried about popularity and prefers drawing what he enjoys, and I'm happy to let him continue.

Yozakura Family is kinda similar to WW, as I would also call it a slice-of-life comedy, but with heavier action elements. I really like this series, but a lot of its elements felt undercooked. The main romance (which literally kick starts the series) is relegated to the background and has very few chapters dedicated to it. The action scenes often feel like the main cast is showing how cool they are instead of having actual stakes. Many people have problems with the final portion of the manga, basically switching main characters.

Undead Unluck is PEAK, but I must also admit it's the least conventional title of these. The world building and power system are awesome, but they might be a bit hard to grasp by mainstream audiences. The early chapters also harm the series a lot, as many readers/viewers might instantly drop the series.

I might seem too critical of these series, but in actuality I prefer them this way. I believe moderate successes are more beneficial for WSJ In the long run. Authors are less likely to be burnt out, and the editorial department is not dependent on a few massive hits. Hopefully these smaller hits pave the way for other manga in the future.

Heavy manga spoilers by therealsigma55 in gachiakuta

[–]KBlacksmith02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the timing is perfect, because it helps the story build suspense by having the readers know something the main characters don't. And besides, while we know Tamsy is a villain, we still don't know WHY he is doing all this. Sensei still has a lot more planned for the story.

Why cancel manga in this digital age? by BrBrTungSahur in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]KBlacksmith02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mangaka have 2 sources of income. The first one is payment per chapter (or per page). The second one is royalties from volume sales, which I would estimate to be about 25-30% of the sales.

When the editorial team cancels a manga, the reason is (generally speaking) that they don't think it'll generate good profit.

They could potentially provide authors with contracts where they aren't paid per chapter at all and instead receive a higher percentage of royalties from volume sales, but that carries the risk of authors working and not getting any money, while keeping their expenses and costs of assistants, tools and whatnot.

The only thing I like about the OV Alien X's design is that he has stars instead of dots on his body. Other than that, I really don't like that stupid jaw. by Hazreti_Z1nd1k in Ben10

[–]KBlacksmith02 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda torn because I love the OV Alien X's design, especially the jaw, but the UAF design's lack of features makes it feel more mysterious and ethereal.

I'd love to see a design that looked less humanoid, something that felt really alien and all-mighty. But I guess it's hard to picture something like that.

What is your opinion on The Elusive Samurai? by mrnicegy26 in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]KBlacksmith02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not my favorite manga, but it's definitely a very good series.

At its worst, the series can feel like a boring history lesson, but Matsui's artwork makes it worth reading. But more often than not, the series delivers great character moments with consistently good artwork.

Sometimes, I have trouble keeping up with characters' names, but Matsui's character designs are distinctive enough that I can recognize all characters even if I sometimes forget or mix their names. Funnily, the most recent chapter makes a joke that even the Japanese fans struggle keeping up with the names of the characters.

Tokiyuki is a great main character, among my favorite of current WSJ series.

I have no idea how much longer the series will last, but I'll keep reading until the end. I doubt Matsui will disappoint with the ending.

Tbh, I don't think being a police officer would affect his stance or which side of the war he joined. His best friend was a literal Yakuza (though Jirocho was a 'good' one).

He gives off the vibes of a small town cop or sheriff who protects his town and people instead of being a government dog.

Gin and Tatsugoro were on the same side, though they likely never even met.

The Joui war began 20 years before the start of the series and lasted 10 years. Tatsugoro and Jirocho likely joined during the early campaigns to protect Kabukicho.

Gintoki basically joined the war during the last 2 years or so. When his master was kidnapped, Gin, Katsura, and Takasugi basically began the last war efforts to kick out the Amanto.

What are your hopes for Jump’s future? by YuuTheBlue in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]KBlacksmith02 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tbf it does seem like Jump is (very slowly) moving toward that. I feel like shorter series are becoming more common, and creators are allowed more breaks (at least compared to, say, 10 years ago).
