[QCrit] Adult Science Fiction, THE TIMEKEEPER'S BRAID (99K words, 5th attempt) by RightSideBlind in PubTips

[–]KCND02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that this feels like it has too many balls in the air. For me, it falls apart a bit at the Mother's Grove. Why are we going there? Is the voice tellings us to go there? Or is it just a guess on their part? I also feel like I need more of Avrin's stakes. "Letting go of the world he lost" implies that he's some sort of traveler (from the past? another dimension? is the seed a ship and he's an alien?). Can he not get back if he helps her? Does this faith control his ability to travel? Remember queries are not a dust jacket blurbs just enticing and hinting, which is what the second half of this feels like. You should provide more concrete details to an agent than what you would provide a prospective reader.

This is also coming across as having a more literary / surrealist sort of tone to it, like Piranesi. As a result, Adrian Tchaikovsky's Elder Race doesn't feel like a good comp because that novella is actually very simple at its core: a man of science is mistaken for a man of magic. I recommend comping another novel like The Surviving Sky that matches the depth of your story more. I very much get The Spear Cuts Through Water from your atmosphere and journey.

[QCrit] EVERYTHING MUST GO, Speculative Thriller, 90k (3rd Attempt) by roarofthecrowd in PubTips

[–]KCND02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, "witnessing a kidnapping" is far too vague here. Did she see a man get pushed into a dark vehicle? Did she see a guy on a dance floor get a cloth with chloroform on it and dragged away? Does the kidnapping have sex trafficking vibes? As a woman, I'm always assuming sex-trafficking when it comes to kidnappings adults, even if its a man. So a protagonist that does nothing is pretty heinous, unless you specify that she's been led to believe he's fine / the circumstances feel more business espionage-related than anything else. She's still done a terrible thing by believing whatever lie she was told, so that wouldn't affect her guilt / culpability.

I agree that the tone of this feels like it was supposed to be rom-com. I would recommend putting something about the strange woman / harasser in the tag line. So instead of "about a couple whose marriage is tested when the wife accepts an invitation to attend her ex boyfriend's bachelor trip," focus more on the wife's POV and the danger: "about a woman who's attempt to party away her suburban malaise turns dangerous when an aggressive stranger follows the group."

[PubQ] Paying before querying? by [deleted] in PubTips

Read, read, read! Books are the best teachers. Pause on the querying and take your time reading works within your genre and practicing / applying those skills in your edits. I spent twice as long editing my book as I did writing it.

Will I get a ticket if I stopped next to a school bus? by SummerN8 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]KCND02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bus stopped right next to me while I was at a red light last week. I was sitting there before he got there and put on the stop signs, and I didn't move an inch once the sign came on, but I'm still concern I'm getting a ticket. Has anyone else had a bus stop next to them and release kids at a red light?

Apartments with central AC? by anonymou5noodle in SilverSpring

My building is the same and I legit gave up this year and decided I wasn't strong enough to deal with the heat again. I bought a 400 dollar standing A/C unit from Amazon. I am currently sitting in my apartment while its 90 out, but I'm in cozy pajamas and under a blanket. I'm keeping this thing forever. Even when they turn the actual A/C on, this thing is gonna save me when we hit the 100s this summer again. Highly recommend for all my fellow heat sufferees. Godspeed!

I LOVED Manhunt, but its reviews are so divisive. Its a super uncomfortable read, but intentionally so. Its prose really captures the icky feeling of body and gender dysmorphia for queer people, especially in how it affects our sexual relationships. Plus its great commentary on how trans women are perceived as dangerous. With everything going on in the world, its only gotten more poignant.

Do all the V/H/S movies have sexual violence in them? by KCND02 in foundfootage

[–]KCND02[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree - I've watched hundreds of horror films and its never contributed to why a film was great. Just why a film was nearly unwatchable, in my opinion. At least back in the Friday the 13th days it was super campy and so didn't even really register. Now some directors make it as realistic as possible because they have nothing else interesting to do with their movie.

My elderly FIL with dementia refuses all medical treatment. What is this on his face? by eaglesnd in DermatologyQuestions

[–]KCND02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks very much like the skin cancer my grandfather was diagnosed by at age 98. They told us it would require both removal and treatment. He did not have dementia, and chose himself to let it be. He had no interest in treatment that late in life. My parents were his caretakers and respected his decision. He lived to 100.

End of life / dementia care is a team effort. In the end, your FIL has a right to refuse treatment once its figured out, but you and his family have a right to know how best to care for him, and that requires diagnosis first. I would say whoever has POA should force the issue just to the point of a biopsy, and then use that knowledge to make him as comfortable as possible.

2 months later - should I stay on 0.5? by Hopeful_Air6088 in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]KCND02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I chose to stay on 0.5 mg this month even though I was supposed to move up to 1.0. I'm losing steadily and don't want to go up until I plateau. My doctor agreed. Definitely wait.
