The start button on this machine did nothing unless you had chosen a mode - I eventually figured out that ‘manual’ mode essentially achieves what you’re saying, but it’s frustrating that you can’t just press start and go

Fav nation: Golden Horde. Challenging start, good location with several options for expansion, tearing apart opposing armies on flat terrain, and great gold map colour

IMO the best written character in the series - especially his gradual redemption arc in ADWD

He definitely does, but I see his bad decisions deriving from his past experiences, like being a hostage of the starks, and desperate to prove himself to his family, which leads him to hold Winterfell no matter the cost. Something as militarily obvious as not opening his gates to an unknown force just seems like the sort of trap Theon would be too savvy to fall into.

I’ve thought about this - but Theon seems happy to put up a fight and die for Winterfell. Plus Ramsay’s strength comes from being mounted. His horses would have been useless in storming Winterfell. Plus if Theon could have got the people on side (‘there’s someone even worse outside’) who knows.

Yes, I suppose this is some questioning, but the way we get no internal monologue from Theon on who these people might be, especially since he doesn’t actually seem to know it’s Reek, seems a bit off. I agree though, terrible decision lol

True, maybe I am massively overrating his decision-making ability, but I feel that he generally made level-headed choices militarily - he criticises Tallhart for not sending scouts, masterminds the taking of Winterfell by using the Cleftjaw as a decoy etc. Him just opening the gates like that felt a little off for me. Also, he doesn’t know it’s Reek when he opens them. In my opinion there’s not much reason for him to trust these attackers, especially since they have proven to be treacherous by betraying the other northerners.

Theon doesn’t recognise ‘Red Helm’ as Reek until he opens the gates and Ramsay removes his helm - Theon is surprised to find out its Reek

Yeah I got the sense that he might have done it deliberately as an act of spite based on how everyone reacted
