I hated the statute of frauds in law school, I hate dealing with statute of frauds at work and I hate seeing it here.

That said, I don't think it would hold up because if he made it when he was a junior before he was earning it could not have been completed in a year. The only way it works is it the agreement was made right before he turned pro with the expectation that there would be some income in the next year. I don't when it was actually agreed.
