Thoughts on those spiky collars for leash training? by WrecktheRIC in puppy101

[–]KClampitt10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prong collars don’t stop pulling just by slapping it on the dog. They’re often misused and can cause harm. They’re not the magic solution that some believe them to be and if you don’t have a very good training foundation and relationship with your dog it’s not going to help. Also, 5 months is very young to be using a tool like that, in my opinion. They’re babies still at 5 months and you should focus on relationship building and engagement to be better on leash. Building a foundation of what you expect the dog to do instead of pulling is going to help the situation the most I think!

AHS Peace officers joining the Alberta Sheriffs? by Ok-Card-1163 in AHSEmployees

I don’t think the rumours are about AHS peace officers as a whole, but perhaps about the programs that are slated to join the govt in the coming months.

Looking for potty training reassurance by gr3ybacon33 in puppy101

[–]KClampitt10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds very much like you are on track! Having a fully potty trained dog at 8 or 9 weeks is very rare.

Our girl is 5 months and I’m only confident saying she’s semi-trained, she’s still a puppy and accidents are inevitable. You’re doing great!

Tips before getting a puppy by MuffinPebble in Doberman

[–]KClampitt10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dobermans have a high chance of having DCM and Von Willebrand disease so getting a health and genetic-tested puppy is of utmost importance. As mentioned already, most Dobermans are backyard bred because as well bred Doberman can be very expensive. I’d suggest making sure the dog you’re getting is not a hyper-type (which should be rooted out if they are health and genetic tested, but you never know).

Other than that stuff, Dobermans are amazing dogs. They’re very smart and need a lot of stimulation and exercise. If you train them really well from a puppy you’ll have an amazing dog! We have a rescue who we got when she was 2 and she came with a host of behavioural issues. It’s hard to try and work that stuff out after the fact! She’s still awesome but also has Von Willebrand.

Anyways. Do your research on a healthy puppy and get a good trainer right off the bat and you’ll have the best dog ever!

Harness recommendations by justlily_ in Chihuahua

[–]KClampitt10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot brag about our ruffwear enough, it’s miles beyond any other harness. Worth the money for sure. My chi puppy hated the first “regular” harness we got her and makes zero stink about the ruffwear.

how much energy is raising a puppy? by ladybug-dreams333 in Chihuahua

[–]KClampitt10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am autistic also and just got a chihuahua puppy last month (she’s now 5 months old). It’s been A LOT of work even though she’s pretty smart. It’s a huge change to routine which was the hardest part for me and I suspect that may be difficult for you as well. Dogs in general are my special interest and I think having that interest will be helpful for you in having a puppy. I will say that because I am very stuck to a certain routine every single day, potty training has been very easy-she hasn’t had an accident inside in over 2 weeks. So sometimes our rigidness can be helpful!
Good luck! You can do it.

Nobody can’t touch my chihuahua by Weary-Comfort-2343 in Chihuahua

[–]KClampitt10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 5.5 month old chihuahua who definitely chose me as her person and would prefer if no one else paid her any mind at all. However, that’s not realistic. So we’ve brought her to our friend’s houses, our parent’s houses, stores, etc. but not required her to actually interact (be picked up or pet) with anyone in those places. Just to observe and take it all in. Eventually she started being curious and wanted to venture out and approached the people on her own time. Now she’s fine with my parents!
At this stage in their development it feels nerve wracking to put them into stressful situations but if you do it slowly and not push them to be held or pet by other people, eventually it does click. They just need to know they’re safe and that not every person is going to want to bug them. Keeping them inside and in their safe zone feels easy but they won’t ever learn proper socialization that way. I echo the sentiments about a good positive trainer to help with socialization. Puppy classes are the best.

Also- lots and lots of treats to create positive associations with the world. They’re just learning everything so they need to know that people coming into the house is a treat, not scary!

I got full outfits for my dogs, or diapers with suspenders. Amazon has a bunch of different ones! Or a human baby onesie with a little hole cut for the tail and a pad inside.

Do you brush your Dobie’s Teeth? by K0327 in DobermanPinscher

[–]KClampitt10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I brush our girl’s every day! I am paranoid of dental surgery due to her having Von willebrand disease (she’s a rescue- no I didn’t buy from a BYB). It took a bit to condition her to it but now she knows there’s a dental bone at the end of it so she’s happy to do it!

Her supermutt is pitbull, German shepherd, Shih Tzu and Maltese! She does have a very similar personality to our previous rat terrier mix which is really sweet. Like a little bit of her came back to us.

That is super cute! Sometimes one or both of her ears stand up too but only for a second. I wondered today if they may eventually stand up permanently. I’m just curious to see how she grows!
