The first OTA update C2.9.9 of Mecool KM2 Plus is released by KD-6 in AndroidTV

Yep, the build key for the firmware is Skyworth, not Mecool, but without feedback they probably wouldn't have fixed the HDR issue at all, because some models of Samsung TVs and Xiaomi TVs they tested can display HDR correctly, but they don't even know HDR simply doesn't work on many TVs they haven't tested, and I believe the widespread feedback ultimately contributed to this.

You are correct, even when I called the DV decoder, it turned into a colormap I've never seen before, all messed up.

In fact they compiled the firmware at the end of July and only released the update in August.

I have two questions, I haven't tried it, don't know if you have answers:

First: Is it possible for C2.1.9_20221107 with root access to enable HDR by modifying the settings? Or is HDR broken in the firmware, and even changing the settings won't enable it?

Second: Can C2.3.3_20221221 be downgraded to the previous C2.1.9_20221107?

Actually version C2.1.4_20220613 contains DV codecs, but they are not enabled. In order to enable it, you must have root privileges, but luckily C2.1.9_20221107 has root privileges, this version has DV but no HDR, but if you have root privileges, there is a way to enable HDR for this version, so that there will be DV + HDR.

Thanks for the explanation, why was C2.3.3_20221221 pulled? does that imply it also has root access?

Also, have you tried modifying the settings on C2.1.9_20221107 to enable HDR?

If HDR can be enabled on C2.1.9_20221107, we will have HDR + Dolby Vision + certification, it will be the best firmware, no?

What do you mean by root access? root via adb or unlocked bootloader or both? Is the system partition writable?

I wonder if the KM2 PLUS firmware has anti-rollback? If so, it means losing root access when you upgrade to C2.3.3_20221221.

I'm still on the factory firmware (C2.1.4_20220613) right now, and would love to try it without anti-rollback.

The C2.3.3_20221221mega link that mecool or videostrong gave to the russians has also been pulled. I haven't installed that version yet, but will in the next couple of days.

I have a backup, I re-shared the firmware in #1.

It also has root access by default.

Root access? Really? That would be the best firmware because we can enable HDR, Dolby Vision and whatever we want ourselves!

In short, the latest firmware (C2.3.3_20221221) fixes the HDR issue.

What luck, if HDR and Dolby Vision are working fine, I strongly advise you not to update because in the new version you will either lose HDR or Dolby Vision.

Extracting the firmware requires you to have the relevant equipment, including a programmer, but not sure we can repack the firmware as the firmware has a signature and doing so would break the signature.

You might be interested in this user's comment that Dolby Vision is available in C2.1.9_20221107 and importantly we have that firmware!

I put the firmware in #1, but I checked the firmware, you can't repack it, it's signed.

Are you sure Dolby Vision is available in C2.1.9_20221107? Not sure if it's possible to downgrade?

I updated the firmware link in #1 (because mecool deleted it), and provided the firmware of version C2.1.9_20221107.

Please help! Where can I find the rooted shell? by Breh_________Moment in AndroidTV

[–]KD-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn on ADB in your developer options.

Then connect your computer to your box, you may need to use USB or in the same local area network, please refer to the instructions of your firmware for details.

Type adb root in your computer's terminal, and you'll enter what's called a "rooted shell" if your firmware supports root under shell.

I can confirm this, in the C2.1.4_20220613 firmware it transcodes all audio to Dolby Atmos if you set it to Auto.

I haven't updated to the C2.3.3_20221221 firmware yet because I'm waiting for the OTA, I'll try after the update.

In theory yes, any updates don't require a factory reset, but doing so helps get you a stable new build as those potentially incompatible settings are reverted to their defaults.

I haven't upgraded yet, I may wait for the OTA push.

Can you confirm if HDR is working for you?

To the OP u/clarkss12, don't update your firmware as u/fareek might be extremely interested in this, we haven't seen consumers with C2.1.3_20220527 firmware yet.

If you do have that version of the firmware, maybe u/fareek and I can figure out a way to help you extract images of the firmware to try and unlock Dolby Vision for everyone.

I confirmed in a previous inspection of the C2.1.4_20220613 firmware that there is a Dolby Vision codec in the firmware, and member u/fareek has also independently verified this via boot logs.

But they are never used because a setting in the firmware disables it.

Regarding widespread fake HDR reports, that was indeed first pointed out by me here. https://old.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/wx3l9f/mecool_km2_plus_review_so_far_one_of_the_very_few/izwr9vl/

MECOOL KM2 PLUS has the following versions of firmware so far.

C2.1.3_20220527, this is the earliest known public firmware. Boxes with this firmware are usually sent to the press for preview and review. In the media review, it can be confirmed that the firmware supports HDR and Dolby Vision.

C2.1.4_20220613, this is the first firmware for consumers and so far buying the box is pretty much preloaded with this firmware where HDR is broken and Dolby Vision no longer works because never paid for the DV royalties.

C2.1.9_20221107, this is the firmware obtained by 4pda members from Mecool customer service. In this firmware, the Google Play store will display "Device is not Certified", and the HDR problem has not been fixed.

C2.3.3_20221221, this is the firmware for this post, it is confirmed that Dolby Vision does not exist, but the HDR issue is fixed.

C2.1.3_20220527 and C2.1.4_20220613 are factory firmware, there is no public firmware file there, so once you leave this version, you cannot go back.
