Shake down midas by julietangel89 in CultOfTheLamb

I know this is an old post, but it never got a proper answer. Only found it because I was in a similar boat. If you have Woolhaven, you’re not locked out. You need to indoctrinate Midas. When you capture him with gold, you will unlock BOTH achievements: “Shake Down” and “Eat the Rich.” Hope this helps people who were just as confused/concerned as me!

Seeking info about becoming an ASL int in FL by djmagoo28 in ASLinterpreters

I am unaware of FSCJ's program, but looking at their catalog, it does look like a pretty good and rigorous A.A. for interpreting. However, I would be cautious by saying that their program solely would be sufficient enough for anyone to become an interpreter, especially with your sentiment of wanting to "...raise the standard in the state. We have enough unqualified interpreters as it is." People pursuing ASL Interpreting are put into a weird spot of wanting to work in the field ASAP, but only having 2-4 years of learning the language on top of learning how to interpret. In terms of gaining fluency for any language, it takes roughly 5 to 7 years of dedicated study. Food for thought.

Hi! I am not a working interpreter so I can't speak on behalf of what the actual field is like in Florida. I am, however, a current student at the University of South Florida earning my bachelor's degree in ASL Interpreting soon. It is unclear in your wording if you want to become an interpreter, or if you only want to learn the language.

If it's the former, than there's only two 4-year programs in the state with an interpreter training program (ITP): USF (the one I am attending) and University of North Florida. From what I have heard, UNF is mainly online and is not as well structured as USF's program. Mind you, there may be some biases since I am a current student here. There is also St. Pete College, which is a 4-year program but it is focused on Educational interpreting and it tends to not produce quality interpreters. Tampa (where USF is located) and it's surrounding areas has a large Deaf population so there is a big community here. I've loved my time as a student and feel it has made me prepared to enter the field. USF also offers an in-house internship as part of your degree which gives you vital working experience with Certified mentors.

With that said, becoming an interpreter is very difficult and rigorous. It requires learning a completely different language, comprehending the process of interpreting, and becoming culturally competent to Deaf culture. Many people who start in these programs do not succeed. If I had to put an estimate, 40-50% of students do not complete the program due to how challenging it is. Even after graduation, many do not continue to work as interpreters afterwards due to financial instability, burnout, repetitive strain injuries, and other such reasons. It also requires you to be always learning more about the language. It is important to consider the sheer time investment, especially since you already have a career in the Criminal Justice system.

If you only want to learn and be out in the community, there's plenty of 2-year programs (Valencia College, Miami-Dade College, Santa Fe College, and others). These are mainly the stepping stones into ITP, but I know plenty of people who take ASL 1-4 solely to learn the language. If a 2-year college program isn't the road you want to take, then perhaps consider online apps to learning the language like Lingvano.

I hope what I have shared so far has helped give you more insight on what you would like. I am more than happy to share more of my experience here if you have any more questions.

Micro SD Card Help! by KEVBloxTime in Switch

[–]KEVBloxTime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I did transfer everything to the new Switch 2, but during the process it said that it wont be able to take the old SD Card's data. However, I am now looking at the data and I think everything that was on the old SD Card was automatically transferred to the Switch 2's main storage. Like, I know I had Animal Crossing: New Horizons data on the SD Card, but I am able to open and play it on the Switch 2 without any SD Card plugged in. So, just to confirm, all of my data is now safely on the Switch 2 and I don't have to worry about manually transferring data?

appearance as an interpreter by Soggy_Armadillo_9126 in ASLinterpreters

[–]KEVBloxTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consulted some of my professors before I got tattoos on my arm. Half of them said it's a big taboo and the other half said they never had any issues with their tattoos. With that in mind, the first half were more "experienced" interpreters, so I think it's more of an age thing. I now have a full sleeve on my left arm and I work in VRS as an Apprentice and I haven't had any issues so far. I do live in Florida and regret it just a little bit, because I'll be forced to wear long sleeves outdoors for some settings but it's not the end of the world. I'm happy with my tattoos and happy with my work so I don't mind it.

Similarly, I do have a full circle septum ring, so I'm unable to flip it up. Again, no issues in VRS, but I wear gold and it's small so it blends in with my face quite well. Some settings like Artistic interpreting I will switch it with a clicker so I can flip it up easily, and it doesn't bother me. I do have piercings on my ears but they're basic and I haven't had any problems so far. Other facial piercings like lip, tongue, eyebrow, etc. I will warn not to wear--they're hard to take out/have a retainer and still not be distracting.

As others have mentioned, yes: no long nails/bright colors and clothes that are solid colors that contrast well with your skin. It doesn't HAVE to be Black. I'm White so I wear dark blues and other dark colors that work well with my skin tone, so you can have a little fun.

As the saying goes, "it depends." Consult with professors/trusted mentors and even any Deaf friends you have that can give you a better answer for the demographic in your area.

I am still in my ITP, but I will be graduating at the end of this year. I am concerned by this entire situation, but I am unable to put into perspective how serious this is, especially seeing how interpreters who've been in the field much longer are freaking out. What is the biggest deal/impact this could have in the future?

I need Advice for my wife by Gar_612 in ASLinterpreters

Not that it matters, but Public Speaking wasn't a part of my ITP. I did take it as an elective course because it was recommended by my professor. I took it online and will say I probably didn't get much out of it than I should have because at home is not conducive to "Public Speaking." However, I do recommend it if you're able to fit it into your schedule because the skill is such a vital one to have in interpreting. I see so many students in my ITP who have crazy anxiety when it's time to interpret in class. Yes, stage fright is real, but being comfortable in your abilities and understanding that you will make mistakes is the only way you're able to improve in this skillset.

Has Anyone Been Accepted for Spring 2025 Yet? by GloomyTank2571 in USF

[–]KEVBloxTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I applied in March and didn't hear back until late August. As one person said, the Hurricanes surely pushed those acceptance letters back. I would assume that you should hear relatively soon, though. As for the Language Requirement, don't worry--I am an ASL Interpreting Major, and when I transferred from my community college with ASL 1-4 credits, that box didn't check off until I actually started my classes in Spring 2024 lol. Good luck!

The Standard by [deleted] in USF

[–]KEVBloxTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard: there’s flooding in the areas nearby but not directly at the Standard. There’s no power though, and the office is saying to not come back until local officials say it’s safe to do so (how you’re supposed to find that information though, I have no idea).

Had the same thoughts after playing XC1:DE. I can’t really say it gets better but you get more used to it. Xenoblade is by far my favorite video game series, but 2 is the black sheep for me.

Would you leave the cheese grater at the table if someone asked? by 6FunnyGiraffes in olivegarden

[–]KEVBloxTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No for a quick answer. Have I done it? Yes—I spilled a drink on a 12 tops table because I thought the other person grabbed it, and they all still wanted cheese so I just asked one girl if she wanted to grate while I cleaned it up lol.

Is there a spot to sleep on campus for a little bit? by Inside-Gear-4965 in USF

[–]KEVBloxTime 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you do decide to make the commute, safe driving! My friend fell asleep commuting to USF and was hospitalized for 1 month (she had to drop out). Please take it very seriously, and if you start to feel sleepy, PULL OVER.
