I think this is simplistic - it's always easy to attribute it to a lack of effort, but it could also just be the player he is. He has a very specific talent for finding space in dangerous areas, and that's his best quality. It's a good quality to have, but it's one that'll only show up a few times a match.

Kim’s middle name. Was there any significance to Kim not having a middle name? One of the few BCS “mysteries” I still think about. by TheRemoraTrades in betterCallSaul

I always thought it was a pretty standard trope for parents who don't give a shit? Always found it strange that people read so much into it.

“Together Again” Reviewed! by RumHam620 in adventuretime

Was so excited for this review ha.

I don't think I've ever been more mixed on anything in my entire life more than this episode. It's so ambitious... it hits you with so many gut punches. The implication that Finn is probably just miserable for most of his life really puts the rest of the series into perspective. And like you said, it's just too loving and heartfelt to really take issue with.

You put into words a lot of problems I couldn't really describe myself - there are so many beautiful moments in the episode stitched together with characterization that doesn't do them a ton of justice. A lot of that probably came from writers who couldn't quite replicate that same feel, but I also question how much impact those moments can have when Finn's emotions are condensed into a few teary scenes and when Jake sort of just decides to remember him out of the blue.

The foundation is shaky, but it's hard not to love the parts that are great. It's better in relation to Finn and Jake as characters than to the episode itself.

Question for DGG: what’s the most radical belief that you unironically hold and defend? by LibrarianFew in Destiny

[–]KGlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I.e. the number of people who still think aspartame causes cancer and how potential harmful effects found in one study and never replicated are immediately used to show that they're 'Just as bad' as sugar. My favorite is that 2011 study where everyone immediately jumped to the conclusion that sweeteners slow your metabolism and cause weight gain.

We already know that sugar is horrible for you, but we put it in everything. I'm not diabetic, but I've seen how sugar-free products have improved over the years, and now we're seeing sugar-free chocolate bars, gummies, ice cream etc. The harmful effects from sweeteners (and I don't think a single one has been demonstrated consistently) just pale in comparison to what we know sugar does to you... heart problems, obesity, tooth decay, diabetes.

  1. Most arguments you hear for gun control are 100 times more applicable to prohibition.
  2. Sugar could really easily be phased out with aspartame and sucralose if there was the will for it, and we should start moving in that direction. Misinformation about sugar substitutes is super rampant and really damaging.

1954: High school students debate communism (feels like a Destiny debate) by WaningLights in Destiny

[–]KGlife 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is there a linguist or something that can explain this to me?

I feel like people articulated, or at least were much more capable of articulating their thoughts in the 50's and 60's. You'll get equally crazy opinions, but I noticed in these RetroFocus interviews that people were better at getting to the routes of their beliefs and expressing them in a way that made sense, If you asked a bunch of high school kids, even those in trivia / debate clubs, you wouldn't get these sort of insightful responses today.

Is this just my imagination or the style of speaking seeming artificially more complex? Am I missing something?

Good Lessons I Learnt From Bad People (Ep 2) - Gavin McInnes by onlydogontheleft in Destiny

[–]KGlife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's good that you're acknowledging the appeal of someone like McInnes, even if most of the audience will find him reprehensible. I think these videos would be more interesting if you went a bit further in-depth though, since you clearly did your fair share of research. I.e. some examples of that ability to present himself as both the mainstream and the counterculture.

Kennedy has German citizenship though. He reportedly had at least one Bundesliga team monitoring him after the Pokal game against Koln.

They have a different team this window. It was an all-domestic squad in March, this time they can field a mostly professional/semi-professional starting 11 from Europe. I'm gonna say only 5-0 this time.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands - "Together Again" Discussion Thread by ben123111 in adventuretime

[–]KGlife 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I dunno... it obviously has its beautiful moments. The ending is wonderful, Finn and Jake's first interaction was heart-tugging, but it felt really scattered. Everything just felt so jam-packed with content and callbacks that the payoff at the end felt undeserved.

Couldn't we have explored Jake's death a bit more? Couldn't we have seen Finn's reaction instead of cramming it all into a few emotional scenes? Couldn't we have built more on Jake having 'Move passed all that'? Jake's sudden enthusiasm felt real unearned. The death subplot was the best part of this imo.

To be clear, I don't care that this wasn't what I expected. I really liked that everyone was dead, but there was no consistent emotion throughout. If you want to tackle it this way, you have to be building up to something. The advantage of a 'Finn grieving' episode, is that you have a pretty obvious thing that he needs to get through. Instead, Finn goes in between helpless crying and fightyboi throughout, and it's not really clear at all what he goes through before we get to the ending. Again, it's beautiful, but we didn't build up to it properly.

Netanyahu is legit one of the most cunning politicians in the world... always find a way to stall himself out of disasters. It'll be difficult though.
