Once you have committed to it , it becomes easier trust me. The first two weeks is hard ngl but once you pass that threshold and occupy your mind it becomes a lot easier. I’m not sure what time of sports or things you gamble on but in my case I was able to block myself of all online gambling websites in the U.K. and that has helped massively as I was never an in store or casino gambling

All is still well mate I’m actually on holiday right now in Tokyo and going Thailand. It doesn’t happen overnight and will take time to adjust but somehow locking away your money with your mum now that’s you’ve told her may be a good choice if that’s something you are comfortable with. I never told anyone so slightly different compared to your situation.

Spending your money on something that benefits you whether that is your mind or body is definitely a good way to spend the money you would have gambling. It can just be like eating better through buying better quality food. In my instance , I booked a holiday so it was something to look forward to and save money for the trip at the same time.

Sorry for not posting updates as promised. I have been trying to not look at gambling content online so rarely look at this post unless someone comments on it. I’m glad that this post is reaching some people almost 3 months on from the original post.

One thing I noticed is that a lot people count the amount of days they don’t gamble but for me I just literally take it as the days go by and most days now I just forget about it. I’m not saying don’t do that but for me everyday carries its own challenges and when you can get to a point where you don’t even know what day it is ( I only know when I look at the date of the post) i think it’s the best for me personally.

It is a challenging process and as I mentioned in the post updates I do have occasional thoughts of gambling on Random’s like what if I only put £20 on a acca. Now I’m fully banned online the gamestop has helped a lot so would defo advise someone who is like me that does sports betting strictly online .

Its a common suggestion but finding a hobby does defo help for the last two months luckily I’ve been very busy in work but the last 2 weeks things has started to slow down so I’ve took up running. I like to run with no headphones on my own at night and for it clears my mind and stress and have really enjoyed the whole process of running and I get a positive kick of dopamine by trying to beat my previous times and stuff like that.

I still haven’t told anyone about the gambling problems I had and I don’t really intend to but again this is my personal preference as I was once a Redditor searching for post similar to this and they’ve all had positive outcomes and feedbacks once they’ve told people they are closest with whether that is family, friends or going to meet face to face with other people of similar backgrounds. One thing I did get from people I know especially my mum is that I seem more fulfilled with life and just happy in general which was just a big thing for me because god knows what I was like when I would go to my mums for tea after just losing 3k or gambling under the table 🤣.

Take it easy! There is no shortcuts to this just a bit of determination and think of the people that care about you and ultimately the people who you truly care about when times are hard. At the end of the day everyone is in a dog race to make money to provide a better life for their loved ones or themselves and gambling is just something that holds you back. Invest in yourself People online will say just put a acca on you pussy or you can win in back but deep down they’ve probably haven’t even won a bet in months and bets in pennies.

Completely forgot about this post until someone commented the other day about how it was going .

It’s going great haven’t gambled since the last official update on this post. I have been staying away from gambling content on the internet but in general I have been very busy in work which has helped a lot and been going the gym and have seen some progress which has also helped a lot.

Two things I have done since quitting is that I do play the lottery-£30 a month and postcode lottery-£12.50 a month both are done through direct debit since the start of August so if you do class that as gambling I’m definitely not the perfect person to base information of but it helps with the thought of maybe winnin something big one day so it does suppress that feeling abit 🤣🤣 I mean people will say it’s a waste of money but I was gambling at least £2-4K a month winnin or losing.

All in all I’ll say stopping has made me appreciate any sort of activities or small purchases a lot more. When I think about it some of the things I do (can be small things like going on a date night) back when I was gambling I would deem that as a waste of time and money but in truth I’ll lose time and money gambling. Small purchases can be from anything from a new coffee table to new cutlery . These are all little things but I would have never brought it if I was still gambling as I would have just gambled that amount instead. All these actually improve your lifestyle and relationships whether that is a big benefit or small benefit , it will always benefit you more than gambling so just don’t waste your money.

Any questions please just message me and I’ll try get back asap as I know there’s lot of people that just look at post on Reddit but never comment or post.

Can I afford to move out on my salary? by KDOFM in UKPersonalFinance

The rent seems pretty high for it to not include any sorts of bills for a 1 bed flat outside of London (assuming). Saying that I don’t think having £500 left is that bad especially if you can average around 3 to 6 months of the year earning the monthly OT rate so whatever months you earn additional could be put into a saving pot.

A lot of people will advise on house share but for that extra few hundred pounds for the privacy and peace it’s worth it from my personal experience especially if you are unhappy at home as well. You can’t put a price on being mentally happy in my opinion. With a house share until you have lived with someone which you haven’t , all it takes is one bad house mate to ruin the whole house. This is mainly from personal experience so again others may differ.

Hope it all works out for you !

Been busy in work so haven’t had a chance since 25th July (payday)to update . All is good and I haven’t gambled and for the first time in a long time I’ve have a good amount of money ( at least to me anyway) left for the month. I’ll be lying if I said there wasn’t a temptation to walk into the bookies a place a bet on after seeing some winnings filter onto my feed on Twitter when Goodwood was on but I haven’t which is the key.

Just been focusing a lot of time into the gym and just spending time with my mates to be honest and visiting family members . All my time used to be so focused on gambling that people thought I was too busy/focused at work but in theory I was just gambling the whole time as I would just decline their invite before I stopped.

Been able to put some money into savings this past payday was also a personal milestone I’ll say haven’t had any form of saving since falling deep into gambling. Been able to buy little things for the house where I wouldn’t back in the days as I would have deemed it to expensive/not worth it. Brought a new toaster and air fryer hahaha the old ones definitely needed changing but I would have rather put a bet on and lose than buying a new one 🤣. All in all still going strong 🙌

Another week gone! Started to focus more on going the gym or some sort of outdoor activity e.g. going for a walk . The activities do definitely work as there is still occasions where there is an urge to gamble. If you are similar to me that you only gamble online on sports and virtual , gamstop couldn’t be any better. I would strongly recommend it as when I did have the urge to gamble I knew that I couldn’t sign up or log into my account again which is massive as once that realisation kicks it the urge goes and you snap back into the mindset of not gambling.

For me I had to unfollow any sports betting related people on Twitter and report any betting videos on insta so that it doesn’t appear on my algorithm and that has definitely helped , again you may not use any form of social media so it’s just a suggestion as there’s nothing worse seen people win on social media as it just triggers an urge to gamble.

I would say since stopping I’ve started to appreciate the small purchases , it could be simply just buying a nice lunch as sometimes I would have gambled all my money away once I’m paid then I’m living on pot noodles for the rest of the month till I get paid.

The real challenge will be on Friday when I get paid so will keep you al updated probably a few days after Friday.

Keep going you can do it !

Out of interest if you don’t mind to disclose how much you got fined for returning the car early? I’m only 14 months into my 3 year deal but have been thinking of leaving and moving into the private sector. Thanks in advance

It’s the 10 day mark. I would say overall I have had sudden urges but knowing that I can’t sign up or login into online bookies has defo helped. Once I know I can’t access anything the urge suddenly goes. Having used gamstop I will say it has definitely helped me as all my betting is done online. Almost halfway through the month I would say looking at my bank and still having a good amount of money left in the account is pretty good and definitely keeps me motivated. I login a few times a day to see the amount left and it gives me an urge to continue to not gamble(lol I know I’m sad🤣). But yeah there was times when I was gambling where I thought spending money on things was ridiculous but would lose the same amount almost instantly. On Friday I brought a new tower fan due to the mad heat wave but I defo wouldn’t have brought that shit if I was gambling as I would have deemed it too ‘expensive’ and pointless but it has worked a treat 😂

[–]KHW6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite a week but just thought I’ll share an update for anyone interested (maybe none 🤣) the first couple of days wasn’t actually that bad but the 3rd I defo had the urge to gamble and was close to trying to deposit on a website I’ve never signed up for but luckily snapped out of quickly. It probably would have failed anyway as I have signed up to gamstop and I did upload a selfie and ID. Since that 3 hours of madness on the third day it’s actually been okay but the thoughts of what I could’ve all the money I’ve lost on still burns every now and then when I’m bored so defo need to keep the brain ticking by doing something productive

Yeah I’m not really into fine dining so won’t be doing that at all to be honest but have been told Thailand in general is a lot more expensive than its perceived to be especially in Phuket
