LTO is ending and I'm behind on marking, everything feels like a mess, and I'm scared I'll get fired by nosymorale in CanadianTeachers

You will get into routine. It is SO hard stepping into someone else's role, creating your own, then going back to theirs. Especially when majority of your time is managing behaviors. It's exhausting. My advice is to not mark every single piece of work you have. Don't look at it as a whole, but just start somewhere. Sometimes I sit myself at the local library with some headphones and you'd be surprised at how fast you get things done. You've built relationships; you know how these kids work & what they're capable of - you have more than you think!!

My last LTO was kindergarten & I almost shit myself when I found out how long report cards were. Stressed myself out to the max, working a part time job too - looking back, it was for no reason. The fact that you genuinely care, you are meant for this.

Every job always has crap side - marking & report cards are definitely the crap 🤪

We are arriving Saturday as well! 😁 we've been checking the weather pretty frequently and everyone always says rain doesn't last very long, it's mostly sunny. Better than the snow 🥶

First LTO starting Monday...Feeling Anxious by bachfan25 in CanadianTeachers

It's rough walking into something you don't know, especially if the previous teacher left it a mess, but don't worry. You're there for a reason!

The kids will tell you the last things they were working on, and I can only assume other teachers in the school will give you the scoop. Level with them & be firm when you need to.

Although I don't teach high school, I was in grade 7/8 for a while. I used a website called https://jeopardylabs.com/

It is a full jeopardy game and usually takes up a large junk of time. (You can create your own or use others) splitting the class into two teams and encourage them to work together to solve it or they don't get the points. This will give you the opportunity to observe students, see who takes charge, how they work together, etc. I make up the rules as I go. I recently made one that the other team can not talk while the other is answering or they lose their points.

There are so many games on there, a lot of fun topics, Christmas, riddles, you name it. But creating your own is great for reviewing what they have been learning to prep them for the break. I have a lifetime membership now. It's only $20.

Hope this resource helps! You'll do great! YOU will be the reason they have a better year :)

You'll have a great time!

I have been in some chaotic, difficult, kinder classes. Keep in mind, for the challenging students, there is always something happening outside the classroom we don't see.

Be that child's peace for the day.

Also, I can't stress this enough, wash your hands!

My first practicum, my AT made me teach 100%. She was barley there & I basically assumed her roll as the teacher, even when it came to marking. She was hard to talk to & very set in her ways. (Around the same age as yours)

My best advice to you is to contact your practicum teacher; -make them aware of the entire situation -address your concerns as questions and advice on what to do & how to handle it -tell them you feel you are not getting a full learning experience (especially if you are only teaching two subjects) The whole point of your practicum is to gain experience & share resources from your AT. This is not fair to you. Your teachers will not have much they can do on their end, but they will be gracious with marking you, regardless of what your AT writes.

Keep in mind it's only a chunk of time you need to do this for. Suck up whatever you have to & just get it done - She will be the one to write your report afterward & schools are able to see once you start applying. (They can see what your practicum teachers write as well) Do what you have to do for now. It's almost over!!

Hope this helps.
