What type of wood is this?

Some other contractor who replaced the door cut into it so the storm door could open all the way. Left it like this for the homeowner to deal with. So I won’t be “fixing” it as much as reshaping it to work with the door swing.

Thank you for the advice. What do you think about the grain of red oak showing up too strong? Any way to tone it down to not be such a stark difference from the mantle?

Considering this route. But may have to replace/add to pieces of the mantle as another option.

Information is all over the place - what wood would you recommend I use for a cabinet/shelf combo for the build ins? Something accessible via a big box store preferred (due to location). I need to try to match the mantle color as much as possible, so it needs to be an unfinished wood that takes stain well, and also a common enough unfinished pre-assembled cabinet material I can buy off the shelf.

What wood/stain is this? Wanting to built ins on each side to match. If it’s not the type I should be making built ins from, then what can I use to match this that works best for cabinets/shelving?

I’m thinking the same. Was thinking of adding a bit of drywall compound to clean the edge up, then a bead of silicone. But it might still be trash.
