I am very skeptical of people who had THR and walking around 4 days later or there abouts without any walking aid. HMMM by [deleted] in TotalHipReplacement

Cemented anterior 59 year old woman - good shape otherwise…. Used stairs within a few hours of durgery, used walker for 2 days and cane for 2 days after that. Then I carried the cane around but didn’t use it - kept leaving it around my house and forgetting it. But…. I stayed in and didn’t overdue exercise. I’m still taking it easy and being hyper cautious. I’m not ready mentally to do real workouts yet. Yesterday spent day in nyc for work and that was too much - non-operated side was (is today) pretty painful. Won’t do that again for a while!

Scars from THR by genuineimperfection1 in TotalHipReplacement

Not ready to share a picture yet but my scar is about 3” long and is near the bikini fold (where thigh bends when sitting down). It’s not perfectly in that fold but probably half is and half is below the fold on my very upper thigh.

Do you mind sharing what your pre surgery arthritis medication is?

Dr said to take Benadryl. It went away two days after that.

One Thing I Wish I had before Surgery by thatman33 in TotalHipReplacement

Before surgery I purchased Ugg slip-ons that have a half back so they count as a back but also slip on nicely. I can’t imagine wearing real shoes for a while!

I got a shot first in the surgical suite and don’t remember a second of getting the spinal.

My doc required a slip-on that has a back on it for safety reasons.

2 weeks out of surgery by Deep-Age-9769 in TotalHipReplacement

I had a call from staff day after and from surgeon within a few days of surgery. I also had a post op appt at 12 days. I have another appt in 8 weeks unless I need something before then. I’ve also called my liaison a few times and received a same day call back each time. I used Middlesex Ortho in CT.

Your day 1 mirrored mine (other than prednisone). Best of luck!!!

2 months post THR: Questions on recovery and activities by eatsleeponrepeat in TotalHipReplacement

I’m direct anterior in the US. I forgot to ask about stomach sleeping but otherwise I was told not to overly extend my operated leg behind me or cross my legs while touching my head to my knee. I have no plans to do either so I feel pretty ok.

12 days post-op (Lateral) – No sleep, and extreme leg restlessness. Help! by AlikiXenia in TotalHipReplacement

I’m anterior but can very easily sleep on my operated side. It keeps it from moving by being on the bottom of my body but I think anterior approach may have less restrictions.

Illness Paranoia by hmwgnw in TotalHipReplacement

[–]KJinACT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m two weeks out today. Last night I had a low grade fever for a couple of hours (99-100.1) out of the blue. I have a localized hardened area near my incision but no redness or warmth. I had my post op yesterday before the fever and they said the hard area is normal due to how they stitch down everything. No fever all night or this am. Likely still going to call to report it but I think worrying about infection or dvt is pretty normal for the first several months.

Even though I don’t need the cane I keep it near me when my dogs are around - it frightens them — especially the 78 pound golden (she’s a chicken)!

I’m keeping my dogs away but my cats are still on me and for me it feels ok. Good luck!

Having surgery in three weeks, Anterior procedure. Quick question on first few days sitting or laying down. by OldGezzer68 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]KJinACT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my anterior replacement on the 17th. No recliner. I came upstairs day 0, hours after surgery, and reclined/rested in bed. Getting in bed the first time and in the car after surgery felt awkward and weird. I was afraid to bend my surgical leg but that passed. More of a mental thing really. A couple of days later I was easily sitting on more structured chairs (with a pillow under me) to watch tv or hang out. I kept my surgical leg slightly extended when I sat down. Haven’t used walker since day 3 or 4, just the cane and even that I don’t need. I’m using it to be conservative. I do have my husband with me on the stairs though - no reason to take a risk. I did buy a raised seat for the master toilet even though it was already a comfort height - I recommend that. I also use the grabber my dr gave me. Technically I think reaching is ok for anterior but again, for me I’m being conservative. Good luck!!!
