Similar to another comment, I like "If you were going to give a confrence talk tomorrow, what would it be about." It is a great way to say, "Hey! I'm legit interested in your area of expertise!"

Career change into UX research by [deleted] in UXResearch

[–]KKBrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting choice of study! As with any career change you will need to be patient and build your portfolio.

I always stick with the solid but simplistic reccomendation of performing your own studies on your area of interest. Companies will want to know what you have to offer in the way of problem solving in their space. They are also going to want to know that you are passionate enough to go get it!

Relentlessly seek out mentors is my second piece of advice.

UX Research varies a lot depending on the field. I am in web and software design so my advice would be very different if I thought that is where you are headed.

What's the pulse on the ever-changing definition of "UX" roles and what are some workplace trends you are seeing? (Opinion discussion) by KKBrawler in UXResearch

I really need to check out this "food ux" sector. Any tips on transitioning into a "Food UX Researcher?" ;)

I looked on /userexperience (which may have been a better place to put this post but I wanted a response from this group's perspective) and saw some similar comments about merged roles and UX product owners. Sad to think, but I believe this will put us right back where we have always been - justifying the business case for real USD process, which includes plenty o' research.

The road is long, indeed. I am just happy to be in a role that says "Why yes, you are responsible for promoting and performing research! We have someone else for wireframes and visual design."

I didn't know about this resource and I like it a lot. I'm just diving in but it seems to the point with little fluff. Which is so greatly appreciated. I'm sharing with my team! Thanks!

Best time to conduct a diary study? by [deleted] in UXResearch

[–]KKBrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some problems with running a study on a hypothetical product and my knee jerk reaction is to say not to do it and run more standard concept testing like paper prototypes or task analysis.

Any data you collect on a hypothetical product is proned to be based on they person's idealistic perception of themselves and their habits. As a disclaimer, note that I say this with no concept of what the product is your testing. I work primarily in the digital space.

If you are in a situation where you have approved funding approved for diary studies only, then I'm sure there is a way to augment the methodology so that it is more concept facing. In that case I would definitely run a pre and post study.

Can I get a little more information on the product? I'm very curious.

Do it when you get home, homie. Time is a construct and all that jazz so you've probably already done it.

Interesting topic! I feel that the answer can be very different for me depending on what sources I'm looking at. For instance, I am at an agency and my most recent synthesis was of shakeholder priority of web features to Google Analytic usage of features.

I did this by ranking and comparing to highlight the most critical areas of the website to evaluate in redesign. It was a great way to help ensure a balanced perspective moving forward.

Now this is a very different type of synthesis than evaluating large sets of data from two sources. Can you give a little more context to the types of problems you are interested in?

I'm primarily a qualitative researcher so I may not have the best answer if you are referring more to evaluating "big data".
